“No matter what the situation, if we can help children talk about their concerns and their feelings, and really listen to what they tell us, we are letting them know we care deeply about them.”
"It's not the honors and the prizes and the fancy outsides of life which ultimately nourish our souls. It's the knowing that we can be trusted, that we never have to fear the truth, that the bedrock of our very being is good stuff."
If you fuss at a kid publicly, try to give them an *equally* public chance at redemption (or some other reminder that it’s all love) the SAME period.
Call on them, joke with them, smile at them, etc
Our brains are set up to remember how things end. It’s important to end well.
In these times, a students’ willingness to earnestly listen might very well be more important than their eagerness to raise a hand.
Our systems should honor this.
“The gifts we treasure most over the years are often small and simple. In easy times and in tough times, what seems to matter most is the way we show those nearest us that we've been listening to their needs, to their joys, and to their challenges.”
Urging people to be positive doesn’t boost their resilience. It denies their reality.
When times are tough, we don’t need good vibes only. We need a hand to keep us steady through all the vibrations.
Strength doesn’t come from forced smiles. It comes from feeling supported.
