Just ecstatic to celebrate my amazing partner Josh getting a travel AND poster award at the @ProteinSociety conference! His hard work learning tons of molecular biology, optimizing constructs, and planning innumerable experiments came to fruition and I couldn’t be prouder!
🔵 CHARGES LAID 🔵
Charges have been laid against a Calgary woman whose dog, a 4-year-old Alaskan malamute, German Shepherd crossbreed named Lucky, died after being left in a hot car on Canada Day.
📌 Lucky’s owner, Kaitlyn Rose FOLKINS, 30, has been charged with:
🔹 1 count of causing damage or injury to an animal under section 446(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
🔹 1 count of causing an animal to be in distress under section 2(1) of the Alberta Animal Protection Act
🌡 The CPS & @CalgaryHumane want to remind Calgarians that the temperature inside a vehicle can rise to dangerous levels in as little as a few minutes. A partially open window does not effectively lower a vehicle’s interior temperature, nor does the availability of water. Never leave an animal unattended inside a vehicle on a warm or hot day, even for a short time – they are safest at home.
🐕 If you see an animal alone in a vehicle on a warm or hot day, call 911 immediately. Be prepared to provide your location & the vehicle’s license plate number, make & model & a brief description.
📞 You can also report an animal left inside a hot vehicle to Calgary Humane Society by calling 403-205-4455.

If you see animal abuse, report it. For more information please see the linked @CalgaryHumane website where they give excellent information and an easy way to report. https://t.co/t7tyGdRoKL
April is Animal Cruelty Prevention Month, and I wanted to support @CalgaryHumane in their fight against abuse. They rely solely on donations to respond and help animals. If you can, please consider donating.

I had to sneak off to another meeting and missed the awards ceremony, but congrats to all the other awardees!
It is pride month, and no one should be left out. Check out this piece in The Conversation co-authored by our Lab Lead, Dr. @AlanSMartino, about the experiences of 2SLGBTQ+ disabled people. https://t.co/5bblf2gOWI

Karen is one to talk! Shoutout to her for being a source of brilliant research and constant joy in the lab. She makes the lab a supportive & fun environment for everyone. Every day is a great day when I am in lab with her!
Have to shout out the incredible @kat_heger for winning an award at her first conference as a grad student for her research on the vaginal microbiome & chalymdia infections.
Not only is Kat a great scientist, labmate and friend, but always has me keeling over in laughter.
It’s such a privilege to work with the amazing @kvlithgow — few are as passionate, eloquent, or knowledgeable about the vaginal microbiome! She’s taught me so much: everything from microbiology to EDI to raccoons & more! I’m eternally grateful for her mentorship & friendship :)
Had an amazing time at #BCID2023 - great science and conversations with new & old friends.
Honoured to have taken home Best Oral Presentation for our research on the vaginal microbiome and protection against dysbiosis/STIs.
In great company with these inspiring women!
Couldn’t be prouder of this group - excellent presentations that were well received and awarded! New friends making it all the sweeter. Till next time! #BCID2023 @kvlithgow @M_Goncheva @ReynoldsLabUVic @ @traivio @BrunLabCaulo
