In a searing interview with the BBC, paediatrician Dr Tanya Haj Hassan condemned the broadcaster for echoing Israeli government talking points as she recounted her harrowing experiences in Gaza.

Dr Haj Hassan, who recently returned from volunteering with Medical Aid for Palestinians, shared the devastating story of her colleague, Dr Alaa, a paediatric emergency doctor at Nasser Hospital.

While Dr Alaa was on call at the hospital, her home was bombed and nine of her children were killed, their bodies charred and dismembered beyond recognition. Her husband remains in critical condition.

Dr Haj Hassan described a healthcare system in collapse: intensive care units overflowing with maimed, orphaned children – many the sole survivors of their families.

She also questioned why the BBC has delayed the release of 'Medics Under Fire', a documentary it commissioned about systematic attacks on Gaza’s healthcare workers, calling for its immediate release.

Biden deciding to airdrop food into Gaza likely signals three things:

- The US government is aware of the horrific scale of Israel’s man made famine and the human cost on Gazans, and wants to distance itself from Israel’s policy of using starvation as a tactic, at least symbolically.

- US leverage on Israeli government is at such a low point, and ceasefire negotiations have stalled, that they can’t force Israel to open the main passageways. Pretty embarrassing.

- The Michigan uncommitted vote has shaken Biden’s election team, and so political theatre to show he cares for Palestinians is a tactic to try and save votes.

What should be clear is that the Biden administration has enough leverage to ensure enough aid gets to all Gazans. The trucks are there at the border, and they can work with Egyptian government to ensure they all go through. Israel won’t bomb them all. There’s enough aid at the border to end the starvation in Gaza in a day.

The US deciding to “drip drop” aid only shows how morally bankrupt their decision making has become.
