If you share a single thing of my lab this year, please make it this competition.

An idea I’ll float here while I figure out how to operationalize:
Lots of researchers with strong causal inference/impact evaluation training have recently lost their jobs due to federal funding cuts. Meanwhile, there are a zillion (approximately) policies my team would love someone to think about how to measure the impact of - and conduct the study if it’s feasible. This could be a great source of consulting income (run grants through @ssrc_org!).
If you have an idea, send it to us! We have a list of interesting policy changes here and will post an update soon:

NEW: Nick Enrich, acting asst admin for USAID Global Health, was just placed on administrative admin leave by Trump admin. It comes after he shared a memo with USAID staff, including those on leave/fired saying it’s been impossible to implement Rubio’s waivers for lifesaving aid
I'm not sure it's actually set in that the Trump administration has done an end run to effectively grind to a halt new scientific research.
They're not pausing the money. They're pausing the meetings needed to sign off on the $

If America lost a major war to China and Russia, they'd demand that we withdraw from Eurasia, downsize our military, and deindustrialize our economy.
Trump is now trying to do ALL THREE of those things.
We're being sold out.

Love this @CharlesCMann ode to “the cathedrals of our secular era” —the electric grid, the public-water supply, the food-distribution network, and the public-health system
"Because Congress established USAID as an independent establishment (defined in 5 U.S.C. 104) within the executive branch, the President does not have the authority to abolish it; congressional authorization would be required to abolish, move, or consolidate USAID."
the evacuation of all USAID employees from overseas is incompatible with the waivers to keep lifesaving programs going, if anyone was wondering. https://t.co/GCaYzQ8VLd
New paper in @pnas led by @vickey17singh! We present an innovative head-mounted eye-tracking system to study vision in freely-moving NHPs. Results counter key assumptions in the field and opens the door to study the NHP visual brain in the real-world.

Our very first Statecraft interview was with Mark Dybul, the creator of PEPFAR.
He lays out why it works so well and why it's been such a huge break with traditional "global health" approaches.
Timely read.
