MoFA has lodged a formal protest to the Govt of India on the killing of a 13-year-old Bangladeshi girl, Shwarna Das of Juri upazila of Moulvibazar district, who was shot by BSF of India on 01 September 2024.
The Bangladeshi government has undermined the country’s democratic process by holding flawed elections, failing to protect human rights, and violently cracking down on demonstrations. @StateDept must take action to hold complicit government officials accountable for these abuses.
Bangladesh: Issuing an Urgent Action for three of the thousands of students who were arrested, @amnesty urges the government of Bangladesh to:
📣Immediately release all protesters who have been unlawfully detained solely for exercising their human rights, including Arif Sohel, Rony Sheikh, and Sabir Rahman
📣Ensure that all protesters arrested for a recognizable offence receive a prompt and fair trial.
📣Immediately grant access to the families and the lawyers of those who have been detained, and ensure that the whereabouts of each person in detention is urgently communicated to their families.
📣End custodial torture and other forms of ill-treatment.
📣Conduct a prompt, thorough, effective, independent, and impartial investigation into the deaths and injuries during the crackdown. Those found responsible for the unlawful use of force must be held accountable.

Met with Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, Dr Hasan Mahmud, and reiterated deep concern at BD law enforcement authorities’ excessive use of force in recent protests
I called for accountability & dialogue with student protesters
Human rights are a fundamental element of 🇪🇺-🇧🇩 ties
Bangladesh authorities must immediately release #AsifMahtab, a former faculty member of @BRACUniversity, who was arrested on trumped-up charges during the ongoing student protest.

#Bangladesh: Students and workers are the most among the people who died in the quota reform movement and the subsequent violence and clashes. As many as 75 per cent (113) of the killed were children, teenagers and young adults, reports @ProthomAlo.

The #Bangladesh Army is understandably concerned about its domestic and international image. The use of excessive force and misuse of equipment earmarked for UN missions will only increase international scrutiny and jeopardize engagement opportunities.

Bangladesh has finally restored mobile internet service.
Students Against Discrimination, the main protest group, estimates that the death count resulting from AUTHORITARIAN PM Hasina’s CRACKDOWN was at least 266.
BREAKING: Diplomatic sources have confirmed that in light of Bangladesh government's response to the student protests in the country, which resulted in the deaths of at least 200 people, the European Union has postponed the start of negotiations with the Bangladesh government concerning its Partnership and Cooperation Agreement which was launched by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in October 2023. This was intended to "expand and develop the relationship between the EU and Bangladesh" and at the launch Bangladesh signed agreements worth €400 million for renewable energy projects and five additional cooperation actions, worth €70 million. .... Bangladesh's foreign minister will be meeting senior EU officials tomorrow. Below is the link to EU launch statement in October 2023: @EU_Commission

Bangladesh: The government of Bangladesh must end punitive mass arrests and arbitrary detention of student leaders and protesters.
“The mass arrest and arbitrary detention of student protesters is a witch hunt by the authorities to silence anyone who dares to challenge the government and is a tool to further perpetuate a climate of fear.
Reports suggest that these arrests are entirely politically motivated, in retaliation for the exercise of human rights. It is essential that the Bangladeshi authorities respect people’s rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly." - Smriti Singh, Regional Director, @amnestysasia

On Friday, July 19, 2024, near Rampura Police Station in Dhaka, residents of the Banasree area took to the streets to protest against the student killings. A clash ensued between the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB), the police, and the general protesters.
At one point, unable to withstand the continuous shooting from the BGB and police, several teenagers climbed a nearby under-construction four-story building. When the BGB and police regained control of the area, a few police officers entered the building.
While everyone else managed to escape, one teenager got trapped. He tried to hide by climbing down the side of the fourth-floor roof. However, two police officers spotted him and fired six rounds from a revolver, ensuring the teenager's death before leaving. The video captures this very scene.
What an egregious violation of human rights!

🚨🚨Bangladesh: Media reports state that security forces have been raiding neighbourhoods and conducting mass arrests, targeting students and opposition activists. Whereabouts of some of those arrested are unknown. Several student leaders have been arrested from the hospital where they were being treated for injuries.
In a virtual press conference held yesterday, a coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement alleged that over 3,500 students have been detained across the country.
Amnesty International urges the authorities to immediately stop the blanket hunt for students and opposition members.
Peaceful protest is not a crime.

I request the immediate release of Nurul Haque Nur. I know him personally, he has visited my residence several times. He is a serious, dedicared and courageous patriot of Bangladesh. He should be freed to receive medical care. The new generation of young politicians moving beyond the traditional bipartisan political structure are and must be the future of the country.
