During the Rwanda Country Spotlight session at #AHTSat5, UN Resident Coordinator a.i. & @WHORwanda Rep. @BrianChirombo reaffirmed UN support for Rwanda’s efforts to build stronger, connected health systems where every provider has the tools, skills & data to deliver quality care.

“Let us not simply digitise healthcare. Let us transform health, and ensure that Africa is not merely a user of health innovation, but a global leader in creating it.”

Addressing the #AHTSat5 Opening Ceremony, Prof. Mohamed Yakub Janabi, @WHO Regional Director for Africa, called for Africa’s digital health transformation to be designed with Africans, governed by Africans and built for African realities.

He challenged governments to create the right conditions, innovators to solve real health problems, investors to take proven solutions beyond the pilot stage, and partners to align behind national priorities.

The measure of progress is clear: technology must help health workers act with confidence, direct resources where they are needed most and deliver trusted care closer to people.

Mental health should be taken seriously. Part of everyday healthcare. Accessible to everyone.

Something we can talk about. Supported by our communities. Built into health systems.

Six completions of one sentence, all pointing to the same gap: the distance between intention and infrastructure.

At #AHTSat5, we are examining what it actually takes to close that distance, the people, the innovation, the access, and the systems required to embed mental health into the architecture of healthcare rather than treat it as an addition to it.

#AHTS2026: where innovation meets intelligent health systems for the future of Africa.

Registration closes Sunday at 11:59 PM CAT. Today is your last day to secure a spot.

Borders divide jurisdictions, but they do not divide risk.

At #UNGA81, I was pleased to join leaders and partners at the Presidential Dialogue on High-Threat Pathogens. I spoke about the need to make preparedness a permanent part of national development and work together across borders.

The New York Call to Action provides an important roadmap for putting this into practice.

Preparedness must be built, sustained and funded, with standing arrangements that connect institutions and communities across borders and turn fragmented data into preparedness intelligence.

Today, RBC’s Health Science and Innovation Platform (SIP) looked at the malaria situation in #Rwanda, focusing on current trends, the recent malaria resurgence and its drivers, but also the ongoing national response to address the rise in malaria cases to protect gains.
Discussions showed that several factors contributing to malaria resurgence include mosquitoes becoming resistant to some insecticides, more mosquito breeding sites, changes in mosquito biting behavior, emerging anti-malaria drug resistance, population movement, climate change, and budget constraints to sustain evidence-based interventions.

Noting that malaria burden in Rwanda is not equally distributed across districts, the ongoing response consists of data-guided and tailored interventions.
To achieve the national goal and protect gains, there is a need for regular local surveillance, stronger community engagement, and timely response.

Closing the forum, DG @CMuvunyi stressed: “Data alone is not enough. We must turn timely, quality evidence into action” to strengthen malaria prevention, treatment, and mosquito control.

Good global health requires investment, which no institution can deliver alone.

@EIB and @WHO launched the Health Impact Investment Platform, bringing countries, health experts and development finance together to catalyse long term investments in primary health care.

This #UNGA, we came together to discuss how to mobilise capital at scale alongside development banks, philanthropy and the private sector to turn health challenges into investment opportunities and measurable results.

Together!

Preparedness is not a promise for the future. It is an investment we are making now. And when country leadership is matched with international partnership, we have a much better chance of being ready for what comes next.

Rwanda has made strong progress in #malariacontrol, but the recent rise in cases calls for renewed action.

Join researchers, public health professionals, and partners at Rwanda Biomedical Centre’s upcoming Health Science and Innovation Platform to explore the drivers of the resurgence, the evidence, and how we can protect these gains.

Blood Transfusion: The importance of Blood Donor Screening in Kigali.

Blood screening is essential to ensure donated blood is safe for transfusion.
Researchers from Rwanda Biomedical Centre and partner institutions analyzed over 38,000 voluntary blood donation records from 2019–2023 and found that infections detected during screening were uncommon overall.

Key findings:

✅ Hepatitis B decreased from 0.76% to 0.41%.
✅Hepatitis C decreased from 0.30% to 0.18%.
✅Syphilis increased to 0.26%.
✅HIV remained stable at 0.04% - 0.08%.
✅First-time donors, males, and older people were predominant.

The findings showed differences between first-time and regular donors, reinforcing the importance of appropriate guidance for new donors and continued regular donation among eligible donors to maintain a reliable blood supply.
