🗣️£221 rise to the average energy bill this week. And Cornwall Insight's outlook? Just a 0.5% fall in October, and only if a fragile ceasefire holds.

❌ The price shock profiteers say new North Sea licences are the answer. They're not: 90% of commercial reserves are already gone and what's left sells at global prices.

✅ The real fix is renewables, efficiency and heat pumps for every home, barely mentioned in Andy Burnham's "rewire Britain" speech.

The next PM needs to rewire how bills are set: a permanent social tariff, an end to energy debt and lower electricity prices.

📈 Consumer energy arrears and debt has more than tripled in the past five years. Customers now owe a total of £4.79 billion to their suppliers, according to Ofgem data just released. During those five years, energy bills have increased by 79%.

❗️ It would take energy companies a few short months to pay off this energy debt with their astronomical profits.

🟠 Ofgem’s data is only the tip of the iceberg: this data only accounts for debt that is 90 days old. It also arrives just days before the Ofgem price cap rises again, with an additional £221 about to be added to the average household energy bill.

Our own data has found that almost 1 in 3 in the UK are in energy debt or are worrying that they soon will be. Many of those individuals are using food banks or skipping meals, just to try and manage their spending to cover their bills.

We’re calling urgently for:

✅️ Mandatory debt referral standards.
✅️ A public supplier performance dashboard.
✅️ A debt relief scheme funded by the price shock profiteers who caused this crisis, not by the households drowning in it.

£35,000 a year in the UK in 2026 puts you in the lower class.

15 years ago it was a comfortable graduate salary that bought you a decent flat, a few holidays a year, a savings habit, and the realistic prospect of a house.

Today it gives you take-home of about £2,200 a month. Rent on a one-bed in any city worth living in starts at £1,200. Council tax £170. Energy and bills £300. Food £400. Travel £200. That's £2,270, before you've bought a single thing for pleasure.

You're behind on day one of every month.

The wage hasn't moved much in real terms in 15 years. The cost of everything around it has roughly doubled.

Every wage bracket has shifted up by one rung — the £35K that put you firmly in the middle class 15 years ago barely keeps you afloat now, and the salaries that used to count as struggling are quietly slipping into poverty.

The official conversation hasn't caught up.

Anyone calling this an 'economy that works for ordinary people' isn't talking to many ordinary people.
