We’re deeply grateful for international aid — but let’s not forget Myanmar’s local rescue teams.

The young rescuer in this video lost all six of his family members to the earthquake. But, he had no time to grieve; he kept working to save others.

With little equipment and no state support, they risked their lives, often doing the most dangerous jobs even alongside foreign teams.

Our resilience is remarkable and heartbreakingly sad.

Severe wind and heavy rain wreaked havoc last night, tearing down many temporary tents that were hastily erected on the streets to shelter those affected by the devastating earthquake in Mandalay city, Myanmar. Many survivors are enduring sleepless nights, left vulnerable and exposed after losing their makeshift shelters. As volunteers work tirelessly to relocate them to safer areas, the urgent need for support and resources has never been more critical.

#Myanmar SAC military junta at work: blocking, and confiscating aid. Outrageous & unacceptable!

A member of a rescue team in Sagaing said they faced restrictions and blockades. “When we try to transport supplies from Mandalay, the military council doesn’t permit it. Even yesterday, when food supplies were being transported from Mandalay, they confiscated half of everything,” they said. The military inspects the rescue teams, they said, suspicious of weapons being brought into the areas under the guise of aid supplies. “They scrutinise even the helping teams thoroughly, prioritising only their [own] security. They don’t prioritise rescuing civilians. They also investigate food distribution teams, asking where they’re from and checking everything. If supplies are transported across the river from other cities, food supplies are confiscated and don’t reach their destination adequately,” the rescue worker said.
