🦩On Wednesdays, we wear pink…or in this case we spot beautiful pink flamingos!
@SFWMD staff spotted the largest group of American Flamingos seen in South #FL in the last 10 years.
We are seeing more & more flocks of flamingos along the coastal Everglades & in the STAs.
Sparrow Dream Team: @sfwmd announces this morning that @zoomiami is on board to lead captive breeding for critically endangered Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow in partnership with USFWS. Big step towards pulling this little bird back from the brink!
And without substantial risk to the residents of the nearby Miccosukee Indian Village. The Everglades is the foundation of South Florida’s quality of life, economic prosperity, and drinking water. Alternatives exist, and there is only one Everglades. (6/6)
💧 Major Progress!
🤝 @SFWMD Governing Board Member Charlette Roman joined our partners at @JaxStrong including Major Cory Bell to celebrate another milestone for the Picayune Strand Restoration Project!
Today, the @SFWMD began using the Miller Pump Station, which marks a giant step forward as we near the finish line of this project.
The pump station, coupled with other restoration activities, works to rehydrate drained wetlands in the Picayune Strand State Forest & restore the area’s natural sheet flow as well as the health of downstream estuaries & habitats.
High point in FL budget: $742M for Everglades restoration. Investing in the world's largest ecosystem restoration protects wildlife + people: 9M residents in South Florida depend on the Everglades to combat sea level rise + provide drinking water. @Sen_Albritton@Daniel_PerezFL
Thank you to the Governor for his commitment to signing State Park Preservation Act into law! Congrats to all the advocates who engaged on behalf of Florida's parks.
A win for grassroots advocacy! HB 209, State Parks Preservation Act, has passed the legislature, strengthening protections for all 175 state parks while preserving the best of Florida's environment. TY to @Gayle_Harrell and @JohnFSnyder. The bill is now headed to @GovRonDeSantis.
Audubon staff presented at the Florida Chapter of The Wildlife Society conference last week. @CorkscrewSwamp Director Keith Laakkonen, Wetland Restoration Specialist Danielle Ivey, and Restoration Technician Jacob Zetzer presented on wetlands, restoration, and conservation.
Recently, @AudubonFL released their annual South Florida Wading Bird Report, which showed that 2022-2023 wading bird nesting levels in the Everglades are on a steady increase—a result of ongoing restoration efforts. Read more: https://t.co/LHXRSCsgzF
Mangroves play a critical role along Florida coastlines. In addition to providing habitat for nesting and feeding bird species, mangroves stabilize the shoreline and reduce or prevent erosion.

Calling all Everglades bird nerds! The @SFWMD Wading Bird Report is out! Consider this a feathered report card of Everglades restoration success - check it out 👇🦩
Today, Audubon Florida released our summary of the annual South Florida Wading Bird Report. System-wide wading bird nesting in 2022 and 2023 was significantly lower compared to the exceptional highs of 2018 and 2021. But there are bright spots!

Picayune is a near and dear project to Audubon's heart. Glad to see it so close to completion--and looking forward to celebrating with all the partners who have kept the faith all this time!
This just in: The court agrees Miami-Dade County missed its deadline for moving the Urban Development Boundary. Audubon has worked with many partners over the years to “Hold the Line” in Miami-Dade County to prevent development into the Everglades.
