Why are some #communities & #industries supported while others are actively harmed by the @AlboMP Gov't?
POLITICAL EXPEDIENCY
The decision to provide a $2.5B subsidy to Rio Tinto in the @AustralianLabor held seats in the Hunter Valley stands in stark contrast to the similar spend to DECIMATE non-Labor seats in the #MurrayDarling Basin, implementing a plan that maximises community DESTRUCTION because it has NO direct political implications.
I think @theCEWH it's important to talk about all the #water in the #MurrayDarling so people get the full picture.
75% of the water in the system is #environment water & even a proportion of the water that is used to grow our #food & fibre has environmental benefits.
So apparently our PM called our farmers 'ungrateful' for the shit deal the @AlboMP@AustralianLabor Gov't agreed to with Europe.
The EU is the 2nd largest economy on the planet & our farmers are almost entirely excluded from participating in that economy.
Farmers could not be anything other than devastated that this is outcome for our nation.
Read how Europe is reporting the deal to their farmers about their 'sensitive' agricultural products.
Australia’s water market is complex but increasingly investable.
In the latest GSX Podcast, Kim Morison, founder of Argyle, breaks down water entitlements, agricultural demand, and why this asset class is gaining attention.

@clint_jasper Not only disrupting water markets, but far more so the impact and disruption to agricultural industries, and their regional communities. 450GL is equivalent to 10% of all water use in the southern MDB, or all of the water rights left on issue to farmers in SA Murray region.
@nswirrigators@theCEWH So disappointing to see that distorting perspective. And in the same legislation they’re moving to spend tens of millions of taxpayer dollars annually on water market transparency measures!
@Jeremy_Morton_@JamesASexton The Coolamon project proposed in 2018 didn’t get up. Too much risk/cost related to future water supply. The property was later sold. New owner is an entity of Renewable Resources Group, USA.
Offshore capital.
@stukhan Out of necessity…with virtually no fresh water rivers nearby; flat, sandy catchments; and relatively low seasonal rainfall events. But smart enough to reserve large domestic gas volumes to sustain cheap energy to make fresh water. What cost vs NEM pricing in eastern Australia?
@stukhan@Jeremy_Morton_ @ChrisRawlins01 Evidence…contrast regional communities in Australia with and without irrigation….developed processing, value add industries, great diversity of local employment, and tourism flourish in those with reliable annual agricultural production
@stukhan@Jeremy_Morton_ @ChrisRawlins01 Not at all…there are opportunities to invest in regional communities and develop sustainable industries, but taking away more of the life blood they depend on for reliable annual production is counter-productive to that objective.
@Malcolm_Bart Wow…thank you Malcolm for many years of insights into commodity markets. The Callum Downs analysis educating us all in the post-deregulation of Australian agricultural markets.
Balance the debate: a register of permanent crop irrigators who choose not own sufficent entitlements! Speculating on water or managing risk? Balance sheet mgmt; risk/return profiles differ in any industry @Nat_Irrigators@SouthBasinComm@nswirrigators@KeyWater1
