What does it take for peaceful coexistence to thrive in the face of shrinking natural resources?

On Day 3 of the Ewaso Ng’iro River Camel Caravan 2026, women, youth, Morans, and elders reflected on peacebuilding and rangeland management.

From sharing water and pasture, rotational grazing, and dialogue to cultural knowledge and intergenerational leadership, communities continue to draw on practices that sustain coexistence.

But drought, resource competition, insecurity, and limited opportunities for young people continue to test this resilience.

You cannot talk about resilient rangelands without talking about peace.

“Is it possible for me, a pastoralist from Nkaroni, to go to a foreign country and own over 670,000 acres of land?”

A powerful question was raised during yesterday’s public participation on historical land injustices at Nkaroni, Samburu, held with the National Land Commission Kenya as part of the #CamelCaravan2026.

The dialogue brought land ownership, historical injustices, community land rights, and access to justice to the forefront.

For pastoralists, land is more than property; it is home, livelihood, culture, and identity.

The day also included tree planting at Nkaroni Girls Secondary School, connecting land justice with restoring the landscapes that sustain communities.

As we mark #IYRP2026, protecting the Ewaso Ng’iro Basin also means recognizing the rights, knowledge, and leadership of pastoralist communities.

Today marked the first day of the Ewaso Ng'iro River Camel Caravan 2026, a walking campaign that brings together pastoralist communities, conservation champions, government, and partners to advocate for the protection of the Ewaso Ng'iro River Basin, promote sustainable rangeland management, celebrate pastoralist culture, and elevate the Indigenous knowledge that has sustained these landscapes for generations.

Along today's 14-kilometer route, veterinary teams administered the Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) vaccine to 9,212 sheep and goats in Lmeoli, Mabati, and Lpus Loompasion in Samburu East.

Beyond protecting livestock, these interventions help secure livelihoods and reinforce the resilience of pastoralist communities who depend on healthy herds.

As the world marks the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralism #IYRP2026, the caravan reminds us that sustainable rangelands are inseparable from the communities, cultures, and knowledge systems that have sustained them for generations.

As biodiversity loss accelerates, the way we understand and monitor ecosystems is becoming increasingly important. Earth Observation technologies; including satellite imagery, GIS, drones and AI-powered data tools; are opening new possibilities for documenting ecological change, monitoring biodiversity and strengthening conservation action.

But technology alone is not the answer.

Across Indigenous territories, communities have long observed, understood and cared for their environments through knowledge systems built over generations. The question is not whether new technologies should replace these systems, but how they can be used to amplify Indigenous knowledge, strengthen community-led monitoring and support the rights of the people who have stewarded these landscapes for generations.

At the upcoming CBD SBSTTA 28 happening in Nairobi, IMPACT Kenya together with @OfficialUoM and @uonbi will convene a side event exploring this intersection. ⬇️
