The numbers are in and the message is clear - Kiwis support citizens-only voting.

@nzfirst wants to restore value in what it means to be a citizen of New Zealand.

- KiwiSaver at birth and a $1,000 top up for citizens.

- Kiwi Kids Grant for citizens having children.

- Restricting voting to citizens only.

We are one of the few countries in the world that allow non-citizen voting and are the least restrictive by far. That puts our democracy at risk. When voters hold a deep allegiance to another country, to the point that they won't become citizens of New Zealand, we run the risk of having our institutions influenced by bad actors.

Voting in general elections should be reserved for those who have made the full legal and civic commitment to this country.

Permanent residence gives people the right to live, work, study, and build a life in New Zealand. Citizenship is different.

Citizenship is the formal bond of allegiance, belonging, responsibility, and democratic authority.

New Zealand First believes that distinction should matter again.
