Currently, my Aunties are still abducted. Family and lawyers have received no update on how they are, nor why they are incarcerated. Concerning my father, there is complete silence.
My brother and I have had no contact with him for more than six months. We do not even know the true state of his health.
Meanwhile, thousands of Pakistanis are peacefully taking to the streets to protest against his illegal and politically motivated imprisonment.
However, the people of Pakistan have not given up. No barricade, intimidation or repression can muzzle the people’s demand for justice and their democratic right to be heard.
There can be no lasting peace or stability while their democratic will is suppressed and their chosen leader remains behind bars.
48% of Pakistan below the poverty line; yet borders remain “secure.” When elite capture drives the state, securitization follows extraction. Secure borders, vulnerable people. The math of hard security never adds up for those at the bottom. #Governance

wow, this is disgusting @RichardGrenell
i had respect for you but seeing you speak in this way to a stalwart human rights advocate is shocking and upsetting
you should really delete your tweet and apologize
Over the past four years, many Republican and Democratic leaders in the United States have spoken out on human rights and the political situation in Pakistan, including the case of former Prime Minister @ImranKhanPTI. We are grateful for those statements, and for the more recent comments related to the ongoing long march. International attention of this kind matters. It signals that the treatment of political prisoners, the right to peaceful assembly, and the broader question of democratic space in Pakistan are being watched beyond our borders.
We want to offer special thanks to Ambassador @RichardGrenell. He is the only figure directly associated with a U.S. administration who has consistently taken a clear and public stand on this cause and continues to support it. During the Biden administration, we did not see comparable engagement from anyone at any level of that administration. Ambassador Grenell’s willingness to speak plainly has been noticed and appreciated by Pakistanis at home and in the diaspora.
We also agree with a point Ambassador Grenell has made: every country and every administration puts its own interests first. That is a fact of international politics, not a reason for confrontation. We are a political party. Our task is to keep engaging with legislators, with administrations, and with public opinion patiently and consistently. Interests shift, circumstances change, and sustained engagement is how a cause remains visible until the political moment arrives.
Finally, a request to our social media volunteers. Every tweet or statement you see from a U.S. legislator or administration figure is the product of time, follow-up, and persistent effort. Please remember that before reacting. We salute every Pakistani American, and every Pakistani American organization, that has worked tirelessly over these four years to keep this issue in front of American decision-makers. That work is not always visible, but it is what makes these statements possible.
To everyone who has contributed to this effort, publicly or quietly: thank you. The work must continue.
Everyone protesting in Pakistan should be able to do so safely and without fear. I stand with all those fighting for human rights, democracy, and the rule of law in Pakistan.
The right to peacefully protest and make your voice heard is fundamental to any democracy.
The people of Pakistan deserve to have their basic freedoms, human rights, and democratic will respected. America will always stand for freedom, democracy, and the fundamental rights of people everywhere.
We are appalled by the allegations against human rights activist @MehlaqaCAPJ, who was simply pointing out the glaring contradiction between your statements and your actions. We know her to be firmly anti-war, anti-genocide, and certainly not racist.
Yes, Pakistan must decide its own affairs. But U.S. policy should also be scrutinized when American officials praise or accommodate unelected rulers while democratic institutions and elected representatives are undermined.
The United States needs to seriously reassess any foreign policy that appears to appease authoritarian rulers at the expense of democracy, human rights, and the will of the Pakistani people.
Richard, this is a remarkably weak response. Mehlaqa challenged your political credibility, and instead of addressing the substance, you launched into a personal attack and accused her of hating entire groups.
That does not make your case stronger. It makes your words look hollow.
You cannot spend years presenting yourself as a principled voice for Imran Khan, then watch your own administration embrace the very establishment his supporters blame for his imprisonment, and expect nobody to question the contradiction.
When legitimate criticism is answered with labels and insults instead of facts, it only exposes how difficult the hypocrisy has become to defend.
Mehlaqa asked a fair question. Answer it.
Pakistan is readying its army to bomb the brave people of Yemen? But didn’t lift a finger to save Gaza? Your guns are trained towards your fellow Muslims - you are not an Islamic republic
Stay focused, @RichardGrenell. The question wasn’t whether you’re “left” or “right.” It was why the loud advocacy for Imran Khan seemingly turned into silence.
And “America First” doesn’t answer that question. Does America First mean democracy, human rights and political freedoms matter only when they are politically convenient?
If dictatorship, repression and human-rights abuses abroad can simply be shrugged off with “not our country,” then spare us the lectures about democracy and universal values.
Principles that disappear when inconvenient aren’t principles. They’re talking points.
Hi Richard. She just raised a valid question. You have been quiet for two years and now you are making these posts before Midterms.
Your boss @realDonaldTrump has been unequivocally praising, supporting and providing power to military dictator Asim Munir and his puppet PM who are responsible for suspending the constitution, rigging the election and violating the basic human rights of citizen.
What is this attitude of labelling @MehlaqaCAPJ a misogynist, homophobe, racist, and antisemite just because she raised a question and highlighted a reservation!!
“He should be released.”
Richard, we heard you the first time. You repeatedly said “Free Imran Khan.”
But while Khan remained imprisoned, Trump hosted Asim Munir at the White House and later called him “my favorite field marshal,” as Washington deepened ties with Pakistan around security, diplomacy and critical minerals.
So spare us the tweets. You cannot posture as a champion of Imran Khan’s human rights while your administration embraces the very power structure his supporters hold responsible for crushing them.
We’ve learned the lesson: Washington’s principles last only until its interests begin.
