RWANDA'S VISIT RWANDA vs SPORTSWASHING THEORY: IF RWANDA HAS SOMETHING TO HIDE, WHY INVITE THE WORLD IN WHILE ITS CRITICS TELL IT TO STAY AWAY?
But can someone enlighten us Rwandans on how you can hide bad things by actually inviting everyone to come and witness them firsthand?
This theory of #Sportswashing being pushed around the World simply doesn’t fit with #VisitRwanda.
It increasingly seems that some critics of President Kagame and Rwanda don’t want the world to visit Rwanda. But why? Are they afraid that people will come, see the country for themselves, and discover a reality that contradicts what they have been telling the world?
Let’s put this into perspective.
Imagine Rwanda is a house, and its head, the father (the president), is accused of all sorts of mistreatment and violence against his family by people who live very far away.
Now, the father and his family are actively trying to attract more visitors to their home. They keep inviting people from all over the world to visit, attend events, and experience life inside their house firsthand.
Meanwhile, the people living far away who accuse the father of abusing his family are going around telling everyone to stay away from that very house. Instead of encouraging people to visit and see the alleged abuse for themselves, they want to discourage them from going there altogether.
So, who makes more sense here? The father who keeps opening his doors to visitors, or the people who claim he is mistreating his family but don’t want anyone to go and see for themselves?
In reality, if the father really wanted to conceal the mistreatment, wouldn’t he be trying to keep outsiders away? And wouldn’t those genuinely concerned about the family be encouraging people to visit, observe, and establish the truth for themselves?
Yet, when it comes to Rwanda, the situation appears to be the opposite. Some of Kagame’s and Rwanda’s fiercest critics seem determined to discourage the world from engaging with the country.
That raises a legitimate question: If Rwanda is hiding something, why is it actively inviting the world in? And if its critics are confident in their accusations, why discourage people from seeing the country for themselves?
Sometimes, the very people accused of hiding something are the ones opening their doors, while those claiming to expose the truth are the ones telling everyone to stay outside.
Perhaps the real question is not simply what Rwanda wants the world to see, but why some of its critics seem so uncomfortable with the world seeing Rwanda firsthand.

@BBCAfrica, why does every major achievement by Rwanda 🇷🇼 seem to become a controversy in your coverage? From Rwanda hosting UCI cycling events to the #VisitRwanda partnerships with European football clubs, BAL, and now the prospect of hosting Formula 1, the pattern of criticism is hard to ignore.
Whenever Rwanda makes progress, some are quick to label it “sportswashing.” But investing in sports is also about tourism, job creation, attracting investment, developing local talent, and putting Africa on the global stage.
Rwanda deserves fair, balanced journalism that recognizes its ambitions and achievements rather than reducing every success to suspicion.
If you are a CEO of Formula 1 and have to sit and listen to delegations led by Gayton or Nelly, I believe this was honestly an issue choice. Rwanda is about business, Gayton is about vibes😂😂
Probably he was also trying to also introduce them to a local 30% BEE partner (i.e. PA member) 🤡
