// The importance of TIMING in animation
ever heard a song on the radio and tell yourself.....mehhh this song is whatever?
happens all the time right?
now here's what you didnt' say:
".... wait a sec, this song is off beat!@# - how is it even playing on the radio??? ..... the sounds don't make sense!#"
(simplifying for explanation)
every song you listen to on the radio, tv, etc.. is on beat even if the song absolutely sucks! - It's on beat simply because the music producers use softwares that ensure the sounds are in sync with the BPM (Beats Per Minute) for that song.
In 3d animation, it's not the same, the software doesn't' know what you want to do. It has no idea what your BPM is so-to-speak. You are in control and if you don't know anything about timing/rhythm it will show immediately in your work and your animation will suffer.
that's why you always hear the phrase:
use references
USE REFERENCES
U S E R E F E R E N C E S
references are the only way to calibrate your eyes to understand what the proper timing (BPM) of your character/shot is.

here, you can see a shot done by Emile. His eyes were calibrated a lonnnnnng time ago! Hehe. 🤣 He knows timing and definitely knows how to tell a story, just like a good song with fun lyrics and a catchy beat!
When it's done right, you get animation that looks and feels awesome, just like this one!
...It's also 17 years old and still looks amazing, just like a classic Michael Jackson song that still sounds amazing today! 👌
