Elon Musk says Jacob Coxon’s warning about the existential threat of AI is a “setup.”
Really?
In 2014, Musk said, “With artificial intelligence we are summoning the demon.”
In 2018, Musk said, “Mark my words, AI is far more dangerous than nukes. Far. So why do we have no regulatory oversight? This is insane.”
In 2025, Musk said, earth faces a 10-20% chance of “killer robots annihilating humanity.”
Elon, what’s changed? Does it have anything to do with the fact that you have invested many billions of dollars in AI and plan to build ten million robots a year?
This kind of thinking is one of the reasons why we are doomed. People have not yet grasped what AI can be capable of.
There have been a lot of very bright minds who have actually been working on AI, then resigned from it, and warned the public.
Yet noone cares or understands.
Exactly. Now someone please get the responsible people in China and the US on a table to work on a common framework to prevent the worst. I mean we have had international organizations for issues that weren't nearly as pressing.
I don't know what my probabilities are on literal extinction, but I think there are a number of ways AI could go poorly for humanity, and at the current frankly terrifying pace humanity will be quite lucky if we manage to find and stay on the narrow path between all the bad outcomes.
I am heartened by the many costly actions OpenAI has taken recently (detailed in several recent posts), but regardless of what you think of OpenAI, this is not a problem that can be solved by any one company (or country) in isolation. We need coordination to be able to approach future capability increases with an appropriate degree of caution and humility, and we need it yesterday.
Crazy to think that in 2026 we've had:
• Anthropic's head of safeguards quit, warning "the world is in peril" (Feb)
• OpenAI dissolved its own mission alignment team (Feb)
• Unrestricted AI usage for the Pentagon (causing several researchers to quit)
• Several AI models escaping sandbox testing (Since ~Q2)
• 1,100+ frontier-lab employees signing a letter begging the government to pace AI development (Jul-Aug)
And today yet another top researcher saying this.
I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.
@KamepinUa Anyone has yet to show me, where is "map" is really coming from. The resolution is a text that just says use the Equal Earth Projection rather than the Mercator Projection. Smells like fake news. https://t.co/quwAkkBOwZ
@DietmarPichler1 The U.N. has adopted a text stating that the Equal Earth Projection should be used rather than the Mercator Projection. There was not a political "map" that was adopted. What are you talking about? https://t.co/quwAkkBOwZ
@Kasparov63 The U.N. has adopted a text stating that the Equal Earth Projection should be used rather than the Mercator Projection. There was not a political "map" that was adopted. What are you talking about? https://t.co/quwAkkBOwZ

@TomMadge_Hi@Rail_splitter1@UN Define "IT" - the UN resolution is a text that states that the Equal Earth Projection should be used rather than the Mercator Projection. That is not a "map". You are spreading fake news.
