Many people think the role of an LC1 Chairperson is simply to sign land agreements, settle disputes, or register new residents. Those responsibilities matter, but they are only a small part of the office.

The real responsibility of an LC1 leader is to drive village development. That means identifying the community’s most pressing needs, mobilizing people, building partnerships, developing proposals, attracting resources, and putting systems in place that continue to serve the community even when the leader is not physically present. A village should not depend on a chairperson sitting in the office 24 hours a day. It should depend on well-designed systems that make services work efficiently.

The foundation of national development is built at the village level. If villages are well organized, sub-counties, districts, and ultimately the country become stronger. That is why educated, competent, and exposed people should not shy away from serving in local leadership. Their knowledge, networks, and experience can unlock opportunities that many villages have never had.

Imagine the impact if someone with a PhD in Management and Administration led a sub-county, or if highly skilled professionals chose to serve as LC1 chairpersons. They could strengthen governance, attract development partners, improve planning, mobilize investments, and establish systems that continue delivering results long after their term ends.

Our higher political offices are already overcrowded, yet many of them have limited direct impact on the daily lives of ordinary citizens. Perhaps it is time we gave greater attention to grassroots leadership, because lasting transformation begins in the village.

~The military chief threatens foreign envoys, incites Ugandans to march on foreign embassies, and threatens to sever ties with certain countries at will.

~ The state passed the so-called “Protection of Sovereignty Law”.

All this happened under your watch and you cheered it on. Citizens have been wailing, but you chose to mind your own business.

Now that the adverse effects of what you chose to ignore have reached your doorstep, you remember that we’re in this together! Well, you’re a little too late.

Most architects design vernacular buildings for clients and go home to something entirely different themselves, an imported aesthetic disconnected from the climate it sits in. The philosophy stays a pitch, not a practice.

Himanshu Patel didn’t do that. Tribhuvana is his own architecture studio, the workspace he actually shows up to every day, built in Khanderaopura village near Ahmedabad, Gujarat. d6thD Design Studio. 2,691 sq ft. Completed 2022.

It is built the same way he designs for clients, vernacular material, local form, detail drawn from the village around it rather than imposed on it. He didn’t build a monument to the idea and go live somewhere else. He built the argument and put himself inside it.

An architect who believes his own philosophy enough to inhabit it isn’t selling an idea. He’s demonstrating one.

Over the past two months in my new role at @UEDCLTD, one priority has shaped our work: delivering the reliable electricity our customers expect and deserve.

Reliable electricity is about much more than keeping the lights on. It gives businesses the confidence to invest, enables essential services to operate without interruption, and helps families go about their daily lives with greater certainty. It is also fundamental to Uganda's economic growth and development.

I know many of our customers have experienced unreliable power supply. Those frustrations are real and rebuilding confidence will require consistent improvements across our network. Every day, our teams are focused on strengthening the system through better planning, investment and operational excellence. We know there is still work ahead, but every upgrade, investment and improvement brings us closer to delivering the reliable service our customers expect and deserve.

The recent commissioning of the Maya integration lines along the Masaka Road corridor is one example. The project, delivered through a partnership between UEDCL and @uetcl, was implemented under UEDCL's approved capital investment programme with the support of the Electricity Regulatory Authority (@ERA_Uganda) and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (@MEMD_Uganda). By strengthening supply and reducing reliance on a single source, the project improves network resilience and reliability for the communities we serve.

As demand for electricity continues to grow, so must our ambition. We remain committed to investing in infrastructure, modernising our network and delivering better outcomes for the people and businesses that depend on us.

I look forward to using this platform to share more about the work we are doing across UEDCL, the progress we are making, and the dedicated people behind it.

We note the concerns on the Mpererwe–Kiteezi Road project. The contractor has mobilized equipment, set up camp, and is stockpiling materials for full work. Forward maintenance is ongoing, including watering to reduce dust and keeping the road motorable.

Meanwhile, @NWSC and @KCCAUG have harmonized plans for the DN600 transmission water mains along the corridor.
These major works begin on Friday 10th July 2026, ensuring utility upgrades align with road construction.

The project remains on course, with preparatory steps underway to deliver a durable and essential infrastructure for a livable city.
