The way this bill is structured does make one wonder—why is a private school student worth $10,000, a homeschooler only $2,000, and a public school student somewhere in between? That’s a huge gap, and it doesn’t seem to align with the actual cost of educating (all) kids across the board.
💰 Then there’s the price tag! This thing is going to cost Texas taxpayers $1 billion in the first year alone and will skyrocket past $4.5 billion by 2030—that’s $13.5 billion over five years. #DOGE
❌ As conservatives, aren’t we supposed to be mindful of fiscal responsibility? It feels like we’re creating an entirely new government entitlement program in the name of "school choice", but at what cost?
The real kicker is what this does to public schools. We’ve got 5.4 million kids in the system, and over 63% of them are economically disadvantaged. If we start pulling money out to fund ESAs, public schools are going to feel that hit hard. I argue that they already have.
Let’s not forget—private schools don’t have to take every kid, and they don’t have the same accountability measures. So, what happens to the kids who get left behind?
Another issue—this bill considers "low-income" to be up to $156,000 a year for a family of four. That’s 500% of the federal poverty level! That’s not exactly struggling. Meanwhile, truly low-income families might not even be able to make an ESA work because $10,000 won’t fully cover private tuition, and $2,000 isn’t much help for homeschoolers. Will private schools just raise their tuition by $10K?
At the end of the day, wouldn’t it make more sense to focus on fixing bad public schools instead? If school choice is the goal, shouldn’t we be making all schools better rather than throwing money into a program that isn’t guaranteed to serve every student fairly? I appreciate your focus on keeping the argument objective, because this conversation needs to be about what’s best for every Texas kid, not just what sounds good in a policy pitch.
This statement by @SenatorNichols lays out the arguments against SB2 that so many conservatives like myself have been making.
SB2 is not a conservative bill. Nichols is a principled man, independent and courageous enough to stand for what he believes despite the opposition. Thank you for your leadership.
