The Government plans to import 25 million 90kg bags of maize to cushion Kenyans against an anticipated shortage caused by drought and other climate-related challenges affecting major maize-growing areas.
Agriculture CS Mutahi Kagwe said arrangements for the imports are already underway, assuring Kenyans that the country will not run out of maize. Kenya consumes about 75 million bags annually, with production projected to fall short by approximately 25 million bags.
“We will import maize. We have already made arrangements for that. We will manage the country. The country is not going to go hungry,” said Kagwe.
Kagwe said the government will also work with the Treasury to streamline taxes and bureaucracy affecting farmers and agribusinesses, while irrigation projects such as Galana Kulalu will be expanded to strengthen food production and reduce vulnerability to drought.

Duale announced that over 24.4 million Kenyans have enrolled in the Taifa Care program as of Monday, July 7, 2025.
He said they were on far-reaching reforms at KEMSA, aimed at restoring confidence and ensuring the availability of essential medicines.
