What to us, is this Fourth of July?
Echoes of a past, our spirits defy,
An old question lingers in the air,
Douglass's voice, in our hearts we bear.
In 1852, he asked it clear,
Yet we find ourselves still fighting here.
To honor his memory, and take up the fight,
For justice, for equality, in the broad daylight.
Under star spangled banners, freedom's song,
Yet the dream deferred, waits far too long.
Breonna, George, and names we chant,
Each a beacon, a freedom plant.
From the halls of power to the streets we roam,
In this land of liberty, do we truly feel at home?
Can we celebrate a day, tainted by past,
When shadows of oppression, long shadows cast?
Douglass spoke of a nation's grave hypocrisy,
A truth that rings, in the 21st century.
Our chains may differ, yet they still bind,
Injustice lingers, an echo we find.
In the spirit of Douglass, we take a stand,
For true liberty to grace this land.
From mass incarceration to racial disparity,
We challenge these structures, a needed clarity.
So, what to us, is this Fourth of July?
It's a symbol, a promise, a shared outcry,
A reminder that our journey is not yet done,
The fight for justice, not yet won.
This day, we claim it, not in blind celebration,
But in solemn commitment to true liberation.
Our history, our future, intertwined,
In the spirit of Douglass, freedom defined.
To us, this day marks more than a date,
It's a call to action, to challenge fate.
So we march, we speak, and we remember,
Each Fourth of July, each glowing ember.
In each word spoken, in each step taken,
The spirit of Douglass, not forsaken.
