Burkinabé students now need government permission to study abroad. This means that whether your father is a cabinet minister or a private millionaire, there is no way for their children to escape the state of the country's educational system

Which leaves them no choice but to make sure that the facilities available to students in the country are befitting of their own children.

That is how a country develops an actual elite. Not like Nigeria where as soon as I finished secondary school, my parents put me on a plane to England to enjoy a standard of education that no Nigerian alive today will ever enjoy in Nigeria. The class my parents belong to is called a pseudo-elite.

A proper elite is what is coming together now in the AES. Just wait. If there is no change of Nigeria's trajectory, within 10 years, Nigerians will start going to university in Burkina Faso and making it out to be a status symbol.

The "international community" demands accountability.

Which countries constitute the international community?

In practice: the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia.

Sometimes Japan. Sometimes South Korea.

Seven billion people in China, India, Russia, the Arab world, Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa are not the "international community."

They are the subject of the international community's concern.

They are the recipients of the international community's demands.

They are the locations where the international community deploys its accountability mechanisms.

This linguistic sleight of hand, converting a specific group of powerful Western states into "the international community" as if by consensus of the entire planet, is so normalized that serious journalists use it without irony in serious publications every day.

And the Indian reader, the Nigerian reader, the Vietnamese reader encounters this phrase and has two choices:

Accept the framing, in which case they have accepted their own exclusion from the category of "international."

Or reject it, in which case they are being unreasonable, parochial, nationalist, resistant to universal norms.

The language is a trap.

And it was built so carefully that most people walk into it before they notice it's there.

We've been quiet recently because Mark Goodwin and I have been working to write the most comprehensive investigation into Polymarket's origins and ambitions to date.

We found that Polymarket's "official" origin story, that Shayne Coplan founded the company alone in 2020 and then built "the company in his bathroom", is a lie. Polymarket really started years earlier as another company called TokenBnk that was deeply tied to Israeli interests, specifically a crypto company founded by Benjamin Netanyahu's niece and nephew. Coplan has actively tried to obfuscate this company from his story and it's not the only thing either.

In Part 1 of this two-part series, we unravel the real history of Polymarket, directly connecting the company to Peter Thiel's efforts to resurrect controversial DARPA programs from its now defunct Information Awareness Office. Polymarket appears to have been chosen by Thiel and his associates to succeed in resurrecting DARPA's Policy Analysis Market where another Thiel-linked company, Augur, had previously failed.

China has pulled off a major hypersonic breakthrough by ground-testing a variable-geometry Ramjet that reshapes its own internal airflow channel in flight — much like a throat tightening and relaxing — and runs continuously from Mach 1.8 all the way to Mach 6 without leaking superheated gases or needing a heavy rocket booster to get started.

🔸 Chinese engineers solved the decades-old problem of creating reliable airtight seals for moving parts inside variable-geometry Ramjets, a challenge that caused severe gas leaks at extreme heat and speed and led most countries to abandon the design entirely.

🔸 The engine’s combustion chamber throat adjusted itself in just one-third of a second while inhaling gases at 1,650 degrees Celsius, delivering stable performance across a wide speed range that previously required separate boosters and added cost and complexity.

🔸 The graphite seal used in the Chinese breakthrough is the same one the US defense industry desperately needs. The US defense industry, now faces vulnerabilities in its graphite supply chains – material critical for missile nose tips, rocket nozzles, stealth coatings, and nuclear reactor components.

🔸 China produces nearly 80 percent of the world’s graphite, including the high-purity grades needed for aerospace, and restricted exports of the material to the United States starting in late 2024.

🔸 Washington has invoked the Defense Production Act to fund domestic and allied graphite mining while Europe pushes similar efforts under its Critical Raw Materials Act, yet building new supply chains from scratch is expected to take a decade or more.
