I'm honestly disappointed by what I've seen today across Catholic YouTube channels reacting to the election of Pope Leo XIV. Every livestream I watched carried an undertone of judgment—as if we're all just waiting to evaluate our new Holy Father based solely on how closely he matches our personal values or expectations. He wasn't exactly what many expected. He’s neither a staunch conservative nor a radical progressive—he’s a centrist, somewhat akin to an American-style Pope Francis. And for many, this seemed like a letdown.

But here’s the problem: This judgmental attitude misses the point completely.

When did our personal preferences become the yardstick by which we measure the Vicar of Christ? When did we start believing that we know better than the Holy Spirit guiding the Church? This isn't the right attitude, especially at a moment like this. We’re called first and foremost to unity, humility, and trust.

Rather than focusing on what Pope Leo XIV is not, maybe we should begin by being thankful for who he is—our Holy Father, chosen to shepherd the Church through this next chapter.

Let's pray for Pope Leo XIV. Let’s pray for humility in ourselves. Let's trust in God’s providence. After all, the Church is ultimately guided not by our expectations but by the Spirit Himself.

It is not an exaggeration or distortion to claim that prior to Martin Luther and other "reformers," you find virtually zero evidence of uniquely protestant beliefs on justification, such as the imputed righteousness of Christ (forensic justification). And yet, this, many protestants claim, is the very heart of the break with the Catholic Church—it is a matter of "the gospel."

But this is problematic, because if there is no evidence of this very unique protestant belief about "the gospel" prior to protestants, then the only conclusion one can reach is that virtually no Christian actually knew the Gospel for 1,500 years prior to the advent of protestantism.

This is straight logic.

Many protestant scholars have been honest about this historical fact. One of them, Dr. Norman Geisler (who believed in imputed righteousness/forensic justification), wrote as follows in his 1995 book, "Roman Catholics and Evangelicals: Agreements and Differences" on page 502:

"One can be saved without believing that imputed righteousness (or forensic justification) is an essential part of the true gospel. Otherwise, few people were saved between the time of the apostle Paul and the Reformation, since scarcely anyone taught imputed righteousness (or forensic justification) during that period!"

There it is.

The choice for those who assert imputed righteousness/forensic justification is this: either this is the core of the Gospel, and therefore virtually no Christian had the true "gospel" prior to protestantism, and is thus damned; or it is NOT part of the "true gospel," protestantism was wrong from its inception, and tore the Church apart over a non-salvific issue.

Those are the choices. For someone who wants to affirm the first assertion, go ahead. But that comes with a cost for anyone who knows history. Many do not realize this is the cost such a belief must bear, because they have not read the Church Fathers or any of the other ancient Christians (who also read and studied the Scriptures, by the way). But love requires we be honest and direct about these things.

Realizing this cost after I finally began reading the Fathers, and recognizing what was required to maintain my former beliefs about justification, is a big reason I am Catholic today.

@ppoluha Det är i alla fall så det framstår efter att jag på sistone ha fått större förståelse för pre-modern metafysik, främst då thomistisk sådan. Gud är helt enkelt väldigt mycket mer integrerad i helige Thomas av Aquinos världsbild än i min, men jag jobbar på det...

Majoritetskulturens metafysik + Gud är en kombination jag tidigare har kritiserat, men nu förefaller det som att det alternativ till detta som jag förfäktade också var förgiftat av upplysningstänkande.
