🔴 Urgent | Spain threatens to respond to any Israeli action against the Global Sumud Flotilla

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said his country will respond to any Israeli action against the “Global Sumud Flotilla” heading to the Gaza Strip.

A press statement issued by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the minister affirmed that “Spain will respond to any action that violates freedom of movement, freedom of expression, and international law.”

Albares pointed to the peaceful and humanitarian nature of the initiative that set sail from Barcelona, noting that Madrid provides diplomatic and consular protection to all Spanish members of the flotilla.

The Foreign Minister also tasked the ambassador in Tunisia with investigating the circumstances of the recent drone attack on the flotilla’s ships in Tunisian waters.

Earlier, Spain, along with 16 other countries, issued a statement expressing concern for the safety of the flotilla participants and called for refraining from any illegal or violent acts against them.

The document stressed that violations of international law — including attacks on ships in international waters or unlawful detention — would entail accountability

I don't think I'm exaggerating by saying that this truly is the US's Suez moment: Saudi Arabia just entered into a NATO-like alliance with Pakistan whereby "any attack on either country is an attack on both."

The symbolic is extraordinary: Saudi Arabia was in many ways THE poster child of US client states. If they no longer trusts American security guarantees, why should anyone else?

And of course the fact this actually happened and wasn't prevented by the U.S. is immensely telling in and of itself.

This has so many other consequences that it's almost too much to fathom:

- First of all, it means that Saudi Arabia now benefits from Pakistan's nuclear deterrence (and the deal does include nuclear: a senior Saudi Official told Al Jazeera that “this is a comprehensive defensive agreement that encompasses all military means”, https://t.co/90hWQUmTQm). Which means we now officially have two nuclear-backed blocs in the Middle East: US-Israel vs Pakistan-Saudi. Additionally, Pakistan explicitly rejects a "no first use" doctrine - meaning Saudi Arabia now has a protector willing to use nuclear weapons preemptively.

- Given that 81% of Pakistan's weapon imports come from China (https://t.co/ZCPNfZSodQ), it also means that Saudi Arabia just indirectly aligned itself with the Chinese military-industrial complex

- This effectively extends the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to the Persian Gulf, protected by Pakistani nuclear weapons and Chinese military technology - creating a secure energy corridor from the Middle East to China that completely bypasses the Strait of Malacca

- The timing is probably no coincidence, just days after Israel's strike on Qatar, the ultimate proof of the worthlessness of US protection.

- Other Gulf states, and probably in due times other countries "protected" by the U.S., are likely to explore comparable models in the next few months. In fact this might lead to a cascading collapse of the U.S. global alliance system, leading to an entirely new international system where regional nuclear powers become security providers.

- Hard to see how that doesn't permanently kill any chance of Israel-Saudi normalization: Pakistan does not recognize Israel either and with this alliance the Saudis now can resist US pressure as they don't solely depend on them for their defense

- It puts India in an extremely tough spot: its archenemy just became the security guarantor for one its primary energy suppliers

- This undoubtedly kills IMEC (India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor), the Biden administration's flagship grand strategy to counter China's Belt and Road that was supposed to connect India to Europe via Saudi Arabia

- There is a monetary aspect too: this is another nail in the coffin of the petrodollar system (an agreement to price oil exclusively in USD in exchange for US protection). Saudi Arabia is now much more flexible to price oil in whatever currency it wishes

And this is just what's immediately visible. As a final word: if anyone had any remaining doubt that we were now in a multipolar world, that debate is now settled permanently. American global dominance is no more.

In a few hours, France, Germany, and the UK (E3) will trigger snapback sanctions on Iran at the UN. This will launch a 30-day process that likely culminates in the full reinstatement of all UN sanctions lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal. The move will carry four major consequences:

1. The UN Security Council will formally adopt the demand—pushed by Israel—that Iran cease all uranium enrichment. Israel designed this demand to sabotage nuclear diplomacy and edge the conflict toward war.
2. A UN arms embargo on Iran will return, potentially curbing Tehran’s ability to rebuild deterrence against future Israeli or American strikes, provided Russia and China treat the snapback as legitimate and enforce it.
3. Iran’s already fragile economy will deteriorate further; its currency has already taken a hit.
4. Far from advancing diplomacy, the measure risks accelerating escalation. While Israel hardly needs a pretext to launch another strike on Iran, as I have argued in Foreign Policy, snapback could provide useful political cover—a thin veneer of legitimacy—for renewed attacks.

The E3 argues that snapback is necessary to pressure Iran into resuming talks with the US and granting the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) access to its nuclear facilities, including disclosure of the stockpile of 60% enriched uranium.

On the surface, these demands may seem reasonable. But Tehran has legitimate reservations. Iranian officials suspect the IAEA of leaking sensitive information that enabled Mossad’s assassination campaign against their nuclear scientists, and they fear that revealing the stockpile’s location could simply invite another round of US airstrikes.

Moreover, Iran was at the negotiating table when Israel and the US began bombing it. The E3 now insist Tehran return to talks, yet they make no parallel demand that Washington refrain from bombing again.

Perhaps most importantly, given the unbridgeable gap over enrichment, Trump’s limited patience for diplomacy, and Israeli pressure to resume hostilities, restarting talks that are almost certain to collapse—unless both sides show greater flexibility on enrichment—only increases the likelihood that war will start sooner rather than later..

But that may well be the point. The E3 of today bears little resemblance to the one of two decades ago. When it was created in 2003, its purpose was to prevent the Bush administration—fresh off its disastrous and illegal invasion of Iraq—from launching another war, this time against Iran.

Today, the geopolitical context has shifted. Iran’s alignment with Russia in Ukraine has recast it as a direct threat in Europe’s eyes. The EU is also far more dependent on the transatlantic relationship than it was 20 years ago, while successive rounds of sanctions have rendered Iran a negligible economic partner for Europe.

Escalation with Iran through snapback now serves two EU objectives: punishing Tehran for supporting Russia in Ukraine, and aligning Europe with hawkish elements in the Trump administration—an alignment calculated to ease tensions in other areas of a transatlantic relationship under unprecedented duress.

In this sense, the E3 constellation that was designed in 2003 to prevent war may, in 2025, be pushing us closer to one.

But don’t take it from me. After all, Germany’s chancellor has openly admitted that Israel “did Europe’s dirty work for it” by bombing Iran in June.
