I'm in Nepal and have just visited Nuwakot where I saw the devastating impact of the recent disaster. Homes, schools and livelihoods have been severely affected.
I also met someone I call a hero: headmaster Mr Dawadi. Drawing on Red Cross preparedness training, he evacuated 900 children, teachers and staff in less than nine minutes. His school was destroyed, but every life was saved.
This is why we must continue investing in preparedness. It saves lives and livelihoods and helps communities recover.
IFRC Regional Director Alexander Matheou met Hon. Sudhan Gurung, Minister for Home Affairs, to discuss the Rasuwa flood response and recovery efforts. IFRC remains committed to supporting affected communities through NRCS.
Nine days into the response to the devastating floods in Nepal, the @NepalRedCross has significantly stepped up delivery of vital support to affected communities.
Tarpaulins, blankets, hygiene kits, dignity kits, first aid supplies, emergency toilets and other essential relief items are already reaching people who need them most.
The support provided through the @IFRC_DREF has helped ensure assistance could be mobilized quickly when disaster struck. The IFRC has dispatched additional humanitarian supplies to Nepal Red Cross Society to meet the massive needs resulting from the devastating floods in the country. We have also launched an Emergency Appeal to support the Nepal Red Cross in scaling up its response and recovery efforts.
Thank you to all those making this response possible.
Indeed great efforts of IFRC and NRCS reaching to the vulnerable community people for their access to clean water. This is an example of community engagement and their ownership which will help to sustain the programme.
With @ifrc support, @NepalRedCross builds WASH infrastructure shoulder to shoulder with earthquake-affected mountain communities themselves to guarantee their access to clean water at the household level. https://t.co/dtvyDXl2q5
I visited the @ifrc headquarters and discussed the Red Cross' global humanitarian work and the potential collaboration in the health sector in Nepal.
Seeing the contribution of a Nepali citizen who has reached the top level in international humanitarian work was heartening.

The election of @KateForbes_IFRC as President of the IFRC is a historic moment, marking her as only the second woman to hold this position. This underscores the @IFRC's commitment to diversity and gender equality in its leadership.
This is a significant step forward for us, signaling a new leadership ready to focus on integrity and accountability.
