If we pay Rs.500 for a plumber visit, we extrapolate how many visits he will make in a day and how much he'll earn during the entire month.

It doesn't work that way. Not everyday he may have multiple calls. If he is down with fever for 3 or 4 days, that's zero income. Right from taking his family members to government hospitals, go to his children's school when he is asked to appear, attending functions of relatives and friends, visiting temples in native for festivals - the list is very long.

When I went for name change in Aadhaar, there were such contractual and daily labourers in the queue too. When enquired, I was told that they won't be earning anything that day.

One old lady in her sixties made mistake in the documents she brought. So the official asked her to come next day with correct documents. She started crying and pleading she has also lost wage for that day and cannot afford to lose one more day.

Also there are skilled workers who simply stop working for that month once their income target is reached.

Taken together, these testimonies paint a picture of evil on an industrial scale. The brutality described is almost impossible to comprehend: children subjected to unspeakable violence, stripped of their dignity, dehumanized, and abandoned by institutions that were supposed to protect them. What makes these accounts even more disturbing are the repeated allegations that race, religion, and political sensitivities discouraged authorities from confronting the problem honestly and decisively. These testimonies represent one of the gravest failures of law enforcement, social services, and political leadership in modern British history. The victims deserved protection, justice, and a voice. Instead, many were left to endure horrors that no child should ever experience.

Professor Omar Yaghi, a chemist at the University of California, Berkeley and winner of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, has developed an innovative atmospheric water generator capable of producing up to 1,000 liters of clean drinking water per day directly from dry air.

Using reticular chemistry and advanced metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the system efficiently captures moisture even in arid desert conditions with very low humidity. The compact, shipping-container-sized units developed by Yaghi’s company, Atoco, operate entirely off-grid using only ultra-low-grade ambient thermal energy or sunlight, requiring no electricity from the grid.

This sustainable technology offers a promising alternative to energy-intensive desalination plants, which often harm marine ecosystems through brine discharge. It is particularly valuable for remote communities, drought-prone regions, and areas affected by natural disasters such as hurricanes in the Caribbean, where centralized water infrastructure may fail.

Yaghi’s personal experience growing up with water scarcity in a refugee community in Jordan has deeply influenced his work. He advocates for scaling decentralized, resilient solutions to address the global water crisis through scientific innovation.
