Just concluded a impactful field mission to #MigoriCounty, witnessing firsthand the impactful UNICEF Kenya-#UNJP to End #FGM supported programmes aimed at ending Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and protecting girls from violence as well as #MCH & #publichealth outbreak response programme.
This morning, I started with a productive courtesy call to Excellency Governor @AchiloAyako, the County Commissioner, Mr. Kisilu Mutua, who was ably joined by national government departmental heads, the County Chief Officer for Public Health and the dedicated Reproductive Health & GBV Coordinator. Their leadership continues to inspire real change on the ground.
During the mission, I engaged with multiple government stakeholders and was deeply impressed by the collaborative efforts and strong coordination across sectors.
A highlight was seeing the impressive work being done with Community Health Promoters, made possible through UNICEF’s child protection support. These frontline heroes are playing a critical role in prevention, rescue, and community mobilization.
In 2025 alone, over 260 girls were successfully rescued from the harmful practice of FGM, while 6 cases are currently at various stages of prosecution — sending a strong message that violence is not tolerated. The interaction with girls who said no to FGM and are facing reintegration challenges is rather heartbreaking.
The overall progress is a testament to sustained, community-led action. UNICEF is proud to support these efforts through our local partnerships with @NAYAKenya and @MsichanaKuria, whose deep community roots and dedication are driving lasting impact in Migori and beyond.
Together, we are building a safer future where every girl can thrive free from violence and harmful practices.

With deep sorrow, I share the news of the passing of our beloved colleague, Rachel Kuira, after her courageous battle with illness. Her loss is deeply felt by all of us.
Rachel was not only the longest-serving member of our team, but also a steadfast presence whose kindness, reliability, and quiet strength touched everyone she worked with. Although Rachel valued her privacy and carried herself with quiet dignity, I hope she will forgive me for sharing this news. It feels important to honor her memory by recognizing the extraordinary dedication and thoughtful attention she brought to our workplace, which touched each of us in profound ways.
Rachel’s journey reminds us of the profound fragility of life and how truly important it is to cherish every moment we have together. Not only was she dedicated to her work, but she also took great care in organizing my schedule, always protecting my downtime and ensuring I had time for myself. Her attention to detail and thoughtful support made a meaningful impact on my life and on the lives of so many colleagues.
During this difficult time, my heart especially goes out to Rachel’s family and loved ones. May they find solace and comfort in knowing how much she was admired and cherished by all of us.
May we continue to carry her spirit forward in all we do. Rest in peace, Rachel. You will be dearly missed and fondly remembered.
