Look carefully at these pictures.

On 30 June there will be no march to the mansions.

There will be no march to the luxury estates.

There will be no march to the golf courses.

There will be no march to the beachfront suburbs.

Migrants — documented or undocumented — living in those wealthy suburbs have nothing to fear.

Nobody will be knocking on their gates.

Nobody will be dragging them from their homes.

Nobody will be demanding to see their papers.

The rich will sleep peacefully on 29 June.

They will sleep peacefully on 30 June.

And they will wake up on 1 July exactly as they did before.

But in the townships and informal settlements there will be fear.

The targets will not be the rich.

The targets will be the poorest of the poor.

The migrant living in a shack.

The refugee running a spaza shop.

The domestic worker.

The gardener.

The security guard.

The construction worker.

The unemployed young person trying to survive.

And when it is all over:

No jobs will have been created.

No factory will have reopened.

No mine will have reopened.

No pothole will have been repaired.

No school still using pit toilets will have been fixed.

No hospital will have been repaired.

No clinic will have received more nurses.

No municipality will suddenly work.

No family will escape poverty.

No inequality will disappear.

The rich will remain rich.

The poor will remain poor.

And once again, the victims will be people living in shacks while those living behind high walls, electric fences and private security watch from a safe distance.

The anger is real.

The unemployment is real.

The poverty is real.

The inequality is real.

But the targets are wrong.

The poor are being mobilised against the poor while the real causes of the crisis remain untouched.

Let us stop acting like The Polygamist became big by accident.

This show did not trend because someone was handsome.

It did not shake timelines because someone had nice clothes.

It worked because the casting was serious.

The acting was serious.

The chemistry was serious.

And the production knew exactly what kind of story it was building.

Some people keep asking why certain actors were chosen.

My answer is simple:

Because they delivered.

A main role is not a beauty pageant.

It is not about who looks the most perfect on a poster.

It is about who can carry a scene when the writing gets heavy.

Who can make betrayal feel real.

Who can make silence speak.

Who can stand in front of the camera and make viewers forget they are watching acting.

That is why this cast worked.

What many people also do not understand is that these roles were not just handed out like party invitations.

Actors auditioned.

Chemistry was tested.

Different people were tried for different parts.

Dudu even shared that she auditioned for both Matipa and Joyce, and for the Joyce role she had to read alongside different actors trying out for Jonas.

That tells you one thing:

Production was not playing.

They were looking for the right fit, not just a familiar face.

And look at the result.

In a few days, The Polygamist went from being a South African show to becoming a global conversation.

Number one in several countries.

Top positions internationally.

People arguing about Joyce.

People defending Matipa.

People dragging Jonas like he personally entered their family WhatsApp group.

That does not happen when casting is weak.

That happens when actors do their job so well that the audience forgets it is fiction.

People can have opinions.

That is normal.

But the numbers are speaking loudly.

The streets are speaking.

Netflix is speaking.

The global charts are speaking.

And for me, the message is clear:

South African storytelling is not asking for space anymore.

It is taking space.

The Polygamist proved that when the right actors meet the right story, the world will sit down and watch.
