Kuri: The Story Continues
Someone gently pats Kuri on the head.
Kuri looks up to see who it is.
It’s a small moment, but it says a lot about why Kuri was created in the first place.
A home robot doesn’t always need to perform a complicated task. Sometimes, what matters most is whether it notices you, responds to you, and makes an ordinary moment feel a little more alive.
That idea has always been at the heart of Kuri.
Why Kuri Was Created
Kuri was designed as a home companion robot.
But bringing a robot into a home is very different from putting one in a factory, warehouse, or laboratory.
Homes are filled with people, children, conversations, routines, quiet moments, and unexpected interactions.
So the question was never just:
How intelligent can a robot become?
There was another question that mattered just as much:
How can a robot feel natural around people?
That takes more than software.
It takes personality, movement, timing, sound, attention, and an understanding of space.
A small turn of the head can express curiosity.
Looking up can show attention.
A sound can become a greeting.
Sometimes, simply staying quiet can be part of the interaction.
Kuri was designed around these small moments.
The Kuri Years
Over the years, Kuri went through prototypes, engineering experiments, navigation tests, behavior design, sound design, software development, and real-world home testing.
Behind every seemingly simple movement were countless questions.
How quickly should Kuri turn?
How close should a robot move toward someone?
What should happen when someone gently touches its head?
How should a robot express curiosity without having a human face?
How should it communicate without relying entirely on words?
Kuri appeared in homes, technology events, demonstrations, interviews, and videos.
But some of the most memorable moments were also the simplest:
A child following Kuri around a room.
Someone saying hello.
A gentle pat on the head.
Kuri looking up to see who was there.
These moments are part of Kuri’s history.
And years later, they are still worth revisiting.
Why Kuri Still Matters
Artificial intelligence has changed dramatically.
Today, we talk about AI agents, Physical AI, Embodied AI, humanoid robots, and companion AI.
Language models are more capable.
Computer vision is stronger.
Speech has become more natural.
Robots are learning to understand environments, manipulate objects, and follow increasingly complex instructions.
But one question remains:
What does it take for a robot to truly live around people?
A home robot needs more than intelligence.
It needs to understand attention, timing, trust, distance, movement, and when to respond.
Sometimes, there isn’t even a task to complete.
When someone gently pats a companion robot on the head, there is no benchmark to beat.
There is simply a person and a robot sharing a moment.
For companion robotics, those moments matter.
Looking Back — and Forward
Today’s AI is far more capable than what existed when Kuri was first developed.
But stronger AI does not automatically create a better companion.
As robots become more intelligent, the way they behave around people becomes even more important.
How should a robot approach a child?
When should it speak?
When should it stay quiet?
How should it show that it noticed you?
How can it have personality without pretending to be human?
These questions are still important today.
That is why I want to share Kuri’s story again.
I want to bring these videos, memories, engineering moments, and stories back into today’s conversation — not simply as nostalgia, but as part of an ongoing discussion about robots, AI, and companionship.

Kuri was created in a very different era of AI.
The technology around us has changed enormously.
But the question behind Kuri still feels just as important today:
