My new book ORDERS OF EXCLUSION examines nine pivotal moments in history when powerful countries had the opportunity to rewrite the foundational rules of international relations.
In a new piece for @ambassadorbrief, I highlight some of its key arguments.

Dear Humanities Faculty - You can root for the USA in the World Cup, but please make sure your objections to capitalism and America’s history of oppression remain front and center to your identity!
It was a pleasure to attend the “Parasiuk Dean’s Symposium: Whither the Rules-Based International Order” at @sfuintlstudies and reconnect with old friends. Brilliant presentations by @kylelascurettes and @michael_byers, masterfully moderated by @SLaurelWeldon.
Looking forward to speaking at this great event this afternoon. If you're around Vancouver and interested in international order, please join us!

This book by @davidwaldnerdc will be out in June
I have read it and think it is a landmark work - it shows how to validate causal claims in qualitative research and provide better explanations

People outside of academia sometimes find the concept of a department chair confusing. They are not your boss, manager, or CEO. They are more like an elected representative who negotiates with terrorists on your behalf.
In case you missed it, I posted the syllabus for my seminar on great power competition earlier this week, covering the texts, ideas, and debates shaping the course. My book Autocrats vs. Democrats anchors the syllabus if you’re looking for a place to start! https://t.co/6yz0paZzhS
Hungary under Orbán was not a classic fascist or monarchical regime. It was a species of what political scientists call "competitive authoritarianism" — where elections are generally free, meaning not formally rigged, but held under extremely unfair conditions.

Me: (nodding) that makes two
Proposal: there should be a University-wide office whose job it is to manage student absences.
If you have a good reason for being absent, you talk to them; and they inform the relevant faculty (passively through some dashboard) what students have good reasons to be gone.
@PressSec@KatieDaviscourt Good luck with that, assholes. You’re about to make militants out of a bunch of normal people who just want to live their lives. This one included.
I really didn’t expect this new John Cena action movie to be a rousing defense of NATO and its continued necessity in the 21st century, but I’m an hour and a half in and here we are.
I’m teaching Intro to IR for the first time in awhile, hoping to reimagine my syllabus, and looking for inspiration and good models. Anyone willing to share their own? 👀
