The media coverage of Gaza broke something in the false consciousness framework that even Vietnam couldnโt fully break.
Vietnam happened before social media. The images were controlled. The body count was managed. The narrative had gatekeepers.
Gaza happened in real time, narrated by the people living it, on platforms that bypassed every editorial decision about what a Western audience was ready to see.
And what the Western audience saw, millions of them, especially young ones, was the gap.
The gap between what their governments said about human rights and what their governments did.
The gap between the coverage of one refugee crisis and another.
The gap between the vocabulary used for one populationโs suffering and the vocabulary used for anotherโs.
That gap is not new. It has always existed.
Whatโs new is that an entire generation saw it at the same time, without the mediation of institutions that had spent decades learning how to make it invisible.
The mirror cracked.
Not because Gaza changed the West.
Because Gaza was visible in a way the Westโs previous choices were not.
I love Donghaeโs mom ๐๐ซ
He called his mom and asked, โANNIEs, ELFs are telling me not to do the last song. Itโs the final song now, what should I do?โ
#DONGHAE#๋ํด
His mom answered,
โIf the fans want to keep listening, then you should continue! Keep doing the encore~~โ
