Welcome to the Arias Lab Twitter! Our lab group is interested in understanding virus-host interactions to reveal cellular factors essential for viral infection.
#UCSB's Carolina Arias, who developed a rapid COVID-19 test when the country's resources ran low, & Lisa Stratton, who leads the transformation of North Campus restoring native plants and animals, are two of @SBIndyNews' 2021 Local Heroes! https://t.co/nr6Fw72yzF
Today: Scientists to this day can’t define what life is. For every definition, there’s an animal, a plant -- something that breaks the rules. So how does science answer that? Science writer @carlzimmer joins us to explore the borderlands of life. https://t.co/TP2IbYl8f3
Celebrating all the wonderful women in science! We still need to work on gender equality. Let's break the stereotypes by supporting our trainees, colleagues, and all our future scientists!

Thank you for the great teamwork!!!
SARS-CoV-2 Screening Using RT-qPCR or CRISPR-Based Assays https://t.co/vqEh0DmB02 via @JAMANetworkOpen part of @JAMANetwork
This represented the leading edge of an outbreak.
Our study shows the power of surveillance and the great potential of new testing alternatives (CRISPR-based). Our story shows the power of surveillance and the great potential of new testing alternatives (CRISPR-based). (3/3)
CRISPR-based and RT-qPCR surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in asymptomatic individuals uncovers a shift in viral prevalence among a university population https://t.co/eTdERilrYy #medRxiv
We got self-collected oropharyngeal swabs from 1800 people from our university community and tested them for SARS-CoV-2 using RT-qPCR and CREST (our UCSB developed method). We found positive cases ~3 weeks after the social distancing measures were relaxed in our city. (2/3)
First Goard lab paper published in @NatureComms today! https://t.co/OiRL5Tlc7R
Huge thanks to first author @_kevinsit (new to twitter).
Recap of the findings in the thread below:
As the number of #COVID19 cases rises throughout California and in our community, remember: we’re all responsible for protecting each other. #KeepGauchosSafe. Always wear a mask in public! https://t.co/EkEhlhz9s3
What fraction of populations are exposed in huge #COVID19 epidemics & what drives transmission & exposure?
Serosurvey from Spain finally published!
Tons of major findings here & I haven't seen a detailed summary so here's one.
