(4/5) Labour’s @alexsobel is right. @Keir_Starmer rolled out the red carpet for the #CCP—a #megaembassy and a visit. China’s response? A death sentence for a British citizen.
(3/5) New APPG on Hong Kong chair @emily4MK nailed it: there is no judicial independence in #HongKong. The UK must now hold those responsible for this political persecution to account.

Labour Friends of Hong Kong therefore calls for ongoing parliamentary oversight of the project’s implementation, full transparency regarding security assessments, and assurances that UK sovereignty, safety, and democratic accountability are being properly safeguarded. (4/4)
Labour Friends of Hong Kong notes the government’s decision of 20 January 2026 to call in and approve the planning application for the proposed Chinese super embassy at the site of the former Royal Mint Court.

These concerns have been reflected in sustained parliamentary scrutiny by members of LFHK. They are also mirrored by significant public opposition including at least 10 large protests over the past year and organised concerns from local residents, who are crowdfunding a JR. (3/4)
This decision - which I have fought hard to stop - will be felt most acutely by Hongkongers who have made their home here over the past five years under the BN(O) visa scheme in good faith, trusting the UK government to stand by its commitments to their safety and freedoms. (1/6)
🇭🇰 This morning, I and 33 of my Labour colleagues wrote to the Minister for Migration and Citizenship, following my recent parliamentary debate on the potential impact of immigration reforms on humanitarian visa routes. (1/5)
Thank you @josephpowell for your ongoing hard work on #JimmyLai. Jimmy Lai is 78, in poor health, and jailed for exercising freedom of expression. We echo your call for his immediate release and urgent medical care, and for the #UK to act to secure this British citizen’s freedom!
I condemn the unjust and politically motivated prosecution of Jimmy Lai that has resulted in today’s guilty verdict.
As the Member of the British Parliament representing Jimmy’s son Sebastien, other members of the family, and a significant Hong Kong community, I have seen firsthand the impact this process has had. The targeting of someone peacefully exercising his rights to freedom of expression undermines the rule of law.
Jimmy is now 78 years old and in increasingly poor health. I continue to call for Jimmy’s immediate release and all necessary medical assistance to be provided. I welcome the Foreign Secretary’s statement and urge the Government to do all it can to secure this British citizen’s freedom.
Thank you @DavidPintoD for speaking out and stating clearly that the prosecution of #JimmyLai is politically motivated.
Jimmy Lai, 78, who has suffered largely in solitary confinement, must receive medical treatment immediately and be released at once.
I join the Foreign Secretary in condemning the unjust, politically motivated prosecution of Jimmy Lai.
I am proud to represent Hendon's Hong Kong community in Parliament. I know they will be shocked and afraid as a result of today's news.
Mr Lai must be released immediately and given access to the medical treatment he needs.
Today’s verdict will be extremely distressing for the Hongkonger community here in the UK. The trial of Mr. Lai speaks of the ongoing critical necessity of a humanitarian route for Hongkongers to repatriate to the UK. I've signed this joint statement reflecting on the verdict 👇
A sad day for #HongKong. #JimmyLai conviction constitutes a clear violation of the Sino-British Joint Declaration.
We welcome @YvetteCooperMP for speaking out against the verdict & urge the UK Gov’t to set out concrete steps towards accountability.
🇭🇰 BREAKING: Hongkongers on BN(O) visas will continue to have a five-year pathway to indefinite leave to remain. Six months of campaigning has resulted in the result we were hoping for from the government, with clarity for Hongkongers. (1/6)
🌟 We’re delighted to announce @markjsewards as our new Co-Chair of Labour Friends of #HongKong. Mark is committed to making sure the voices of the #Leeds Hong Kong community are heard loud and clear.
Welcome, Mark!
🇭🇰 Earlier today I met with Chloe Cheung from @thecfhk and Catherine Li from @LabFriendsofHK to discuss all things Hong Kong and BN(O).
Chloe and Catherine, are doing such important work to ensure that the voices of BN(O) Hongkongers in the UK are heard!
🥮 happy mid-autumn festival 🥮
We at Labour Friends of Hong Kong wish everyone a joyful Mid-Autumn Festival — and that everyone can be with their loved ones on this beautiful full moon night 🌕🫶🏻
(6/7) Glad to see @MarkJSewards started his speech by highlighting support for @Chloe_chc_25, who faces a 1M HKD bounty from the #HongKong authorities, & for his strong commitment to fight for #HongKongers.
Also great to hear how other #HKers are contributing to the @UKLabour!
