Under-recognized fact of life: Most competitions follow exponential distributions, and when you're on the tail of an exponential distribution, the difference between the 99th & 99.9th percentiles is bigger than the difference between the 50th & 90th percentiles. The higher up you climb the ladder of competition, the bigger the spread in your competition group.
a pdf with bullet points is cope. hiring is moving toward a synthesis of what you produce, how you think in public, & how you build. for engineers, github & shipping velocity matter more than linkedin keywords. for designers, a live portfolio with rationale beats a static dribbble shot. for product, x threads & blogs showcasing strategic thinking & execution insights are better than a generic list of “owned” features.
the credential-industrial complex still clings to resumes bc inertia, but in high-leverage roles, demonstrated impact & thinking out loud is the real differentiator. the game is shifting to narrative & network, not just pedigree.
