Some ideas in healthcare are really good in theory (i.e. strong user need!), but once in the weeds, are just so damn hard to build to a success story. @julesyoo and I both call out EHRs and navigation tools (we landed on these separately🤦♀️) + check out other nuggets of hc wisdom
new post, a collection of other startup ideas that people sent in with explanations of why they sound good but why they're actually bad
-Clinical Trial Matching
-Looker for EHRs/Super App for Healthcare
-Health Insurance for Startups
-Smart Pill Bottles
-“Find a specialist”
@myrahahmad 100%. The notices always feel like someone’s shouting “get your eggs out of our facility! It only costs us $0.02 to keep them there, and we’ll charge you another $30k if you ever decide you want to use them. But they’re inconveniencing us in the meantime!” 😂
got my annual “you owe us hundreds of $$$ if you want us to keep your eggs frozen” notice from UCSF. Egg storage is basically an inelastic service
- 2022 fee: $560
- 2024 fee: $700 wtf
- 2025 fee when their billing dept reads this: my car (1/3)
I know there are companies innovating in this space (check out @cofertility), but there's a gap in the market: lots of women have *already* frozen eggs without a clear plan or timeline. I'd donate a few to research for free storage. Can we re-write our existing contracts? (3/3)
There aren’t alternatives for storage, and I can’t imagine “ending my lease” early after the physical and financial investment I’ve already made. Yeah yeah, sunk costs (2/3)
"F. What does F stand for, Big Bird?"
F stands for:

If Elmo can do it, so can you. Listen in on Dec 20th at 2:30 PM EST / 11:30 AM PST as our Head of Product, Brendan Keeler (@healthapiguy), gives you a whirlwind tour of how healthcare operators should really, actually think about and use the hottest standard in healthcare.

Big news for @loyalfordogs (!) but also major for any longevity co
1) FDA accepted the "do we think this works?" section of Loyal’s conditional approval app for LOY-001
2) Aims to ++🐕 lifespan by reducing IGF-1
3) Timeline could be conditional approval (& right to market) in '26
1 - Loyal has earned what we believe is the FDA’s first-ever formal acceptance that a drug can be developed + approved for lifespan extension
2 - We have 'technical section complete' AKA the 'does it work' data for LOY-001 - our large dog lifespan extension drug - is done
bought two dx tests from everywell (a1c & lipids) bc 1) don’t have a PCP and 2) seemed easier than going to Quest
So far, got a 404 trying to register 1 test and 2nd was missing a label so can’t mail it back
minor, but took away from the magic of being easier than status quo…
Always enjoy my yearly trip back to Berkeley Haas to speak in @KimMacSF’s healthcare in the 21st century course!
We chatted all things digital health investing and why I’m excited the category has (mostly) come back down to earth

(It's good karma~)
Big week for GLP-1s! Our new statins are here.
- Mounjaro got FDA approval for obesity (now Zepbound). Fewer off-label Rxs & lower $
- Novo's trial for Wegovy https://t.co/n6TxbeU5vl (17K ppl, 45 yr+, CVD, BMI 27+, no history of diabetes) -> 20% ⬇️ in all-cause mortality. Whoa👀
5/ OrthoPulse, a photobiomodulation tool, seems to enhance tooth movement predictability and reduces root resorption risk although research is limited. Adoption by orthos will prob take 10+ years. RCTs so far were small Ns (https://t.co/GxrgZ9bn43, https://t.co/aKpvRHssXg)
Started on a Invisalign journey yesterday. Got curious about the evidence behind the tech.
Was shocked to discover there's a dearth of RCTs / rigorous studies looking at protocol customization, despite Align (parent co) sitting on top of DATA from 17M+ patients 🧵
4/ Invisalign touts "optimized" attachments, but studies show mixed results. Some find no significant difference, others show decreased performance. Where’s the equivalent of pharmacoviligence here? (https://t.co/iTmiw0obyM, https://t.co/axHnUutWEv)
If you're a dog parent, keep your eye on @loyalfordogs. Lots of exciting science makes extending your doggo's life / health span within reach in the next few years
Our pets are more than just animals, they're members of our family. And now, there's scientific research being done that could increase their lifespans. @LoyalForDogs is working on a new drug it hopes will help dogs live longer. @DanaJacobson has more.
