@OdedRechavi Grant funding pressure - it got to be fancy to get money in academia. I am in industry RD now and realize we do what IS required to address a question at hand and nit generate a fancy paper or report
@mbeisen All this happened because a prof interviewed me for a couple of hours for my masters at iit-b and decided that I did have the chops to understand and do things even though I did not know a lot and had no significant achievements 2/2
@mbeisen Yup! What is this with all these super requirements. I am still a pathetic student by traditional standards- got all the grades from A to D during my masters- now I lead a team that does pandemic surveillance and believe make difference! 1/2
WHY do we have so many deadlines in early January?
Why do Orgs in countries that overwhelmingly celebrate Christmas do this? These deadlines aren't natural phenomena - we are in control of this!!
We don't we just... not? And let everyone have a genuine break? 🤔🙃
@drjingjing2026 Corollary: This is a great example of WHITE PRIVILAGE. If you are white and especially blond as is the case here, you can get away with anything under the sun, especially, throwing shades on immigrants !

@TanentzapfLab In my case, I don't know about the first 2 but the third point is absolutely on the dot! So thankful to my team and all the people that I work with day in and day out

The lab alumni being a very important thing. Also, try to pick up what people do not talk about - the differential in power means people will avoid areas of conflict or issues which should be red signal
How to choose a good lab for your PhD? Well, do your homework - webpage, publications, alumni placement etc., but most important - talk to the lab members - as much as possible - do not be shy at all - ask anything and everything, also to lab alumni, if possible. #You#Can#Do#It
And for people like me who did their initial education in native language there is whole another world in literature that I rediscovered recently . A book is your heart and brain speaking to you
I can really kick myself for neglecting the great works of literature for so long, but hey, at age 50, better late than never!
I have read quite a lot over the years, but much more nonfiction and science. This book club is so amazing with the great works of literature!
