🚨🎙️ Gary Neville on who deserves to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or:

Reporter: “The Ballon d’Or is just a few weeks away. Who do you think should win it?”

Gary Neville: “If you ask me who I WANT to lift that trophy, I’ll tell you Harry Kane. He’s my player, and I would love nothing more than to see the Ballon d’Or back in England. But if you ask me who I believe truly deserves it, without any bias, then I have to say Lionel Messi.

“I know people will come out with the same arguments. He’s 39, he’s won enough, he doesn’t play in Europe anymore, so why should the Ballon d’Or go to someone outside European football? Honestly, I think that’s absolute nonsense. If a player deserves an award, you give it to him. You don’t start changing the rules because his name is Messi or because he’s no longer playing in Europe.

“Look at what he did on the biggest international stage. When the entire world was watching, when the pressure was at its highest, he carried Argentina to a World Cup final, producing performances that were simply extraordinary. He took responsibility when it mattered, decided games and delivered when his country needed him most.

“And yes, he wasn’t given the Player of the Tournament award in that particular tournament, but you could hear what the football world was saying. For so many people watching, he was the standout performer. That tells you something.

“I still remember watching him against Argentina’s opponents in that World Cup semi-final. There are moments in football when you stop analysing the game and simply appreciate what you’re watching. That performance was one of those moments. Even now, I can remember sitting there applauding because sometimes you have to put your loyalties aside and respect greatness.

“And we’re talking about a man who is still producing at club level at 39. Just think about that for a moment. At an age when most footballers have been retired for years, he’s still influencing games, scoring goals and creating moments that other players can only dream of.

“I want Harry Kane to win it. I really do. But wanting something to happen and believing someone deserves it are two completely different things.

“If we’re judging this award on football, on impact, on what a player has achieved and on the level he continues to produce, then I cannot sit here and pretend Lionel Messi doesn’t belong at the top of that conversation.

“Give Harry his credit. Give every contender their credit. But don’t punish Messi because he’s 39, because he’s played outside Europe or because people think he’s won enough trophies already.

“Football doesn’t work like that. You earn these things through what you do on the pitch.

“And if Lionel Messi has done enough to deserve the Ballon d’Or, then give him the Ballon d’Or. Age shouldn’t be a punishment for greatness.”
