If Trump's demands for 5% spending on defence really plunges European NATO members into crisis mode then they haven't been paying attention. It seems to me that the point of this demand is that it's designed not to be met. That's what should be causing alarm. 🧵

@lbwahden: https://t.co/npTgWFT9Yw
To celebrate the launch of 66° North, I’ll be publishing a new long-read post each day next week. If this sounds interesting to you, please consider subscribing - and stay tuned!
The Arctic is changing daily. Keeping up is a full-time job. For my PhD project on the evolution of Russia’s Arctic policy, I’ll be keeping track of developments north of the Arctic Circle for years to come. And - on a monthly basis - I will share my findings with subscribers.
Researcher Lukas Wahden explores how the war in Ukraine has influenced Russia's Arctic policy, challenges the prevailing narrative of a China-Russia Arctic alliance, and examines the increasing role of non-Arctic states in Russia's Arctic ambitions.

#Publication 📚| The strategic brief No. 68 "Will Russia denounce the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Seas (UNCLOS)?" by Lukas B. Wahden @lbwahden, research assistant at IRSEM, is now available in english !
Russian MOFA: A suspension of UNCLOS in the Arctic would be 'impossible'. This buries rumours that spread after two Izvestiya pieces in March hinted that Moscow could try to suspend the Convention https://t.co/8Jga6dL0d9
UNCLOS also guarantees innocent rights of passage for Russian commercial and naval fleets, which are hemmed in anywhere but in the northern Atlantic. That's why Russia will stick to the Convention, US or Chinese digressions notwithstanding
