The last American slave ship docked illegally in Mobile, Alabama, in 1860, carrying about 160 West African captives.
Among them was Cudjo Lewis, who recognized how his birth culture might be erased while toiling in this new land.
So when he was freed, he purchased two acres and started a self-sufficient community of survivors of the last slave ship.
Known to outsiders as Africatown, Lewis' neighborhood was modeled on his West African home, where extended families lived together, members conversed in their regional languages, and partook in traditions that might otherwise be lost to them in America.
Today, Africatown still exists and houses the descendants of the nation's last slave ship community.
BREAKING: Donald Trump's defamation trial goes completely off the rails as the judge slaps him down with some of his harshest words to date — causing Trump to lash out at him.
This is one surefire way to ensure that the judge rules against you...
Judge Lewis Kaplan — who is presiding over the E. Jean Carroll defamation lawsuit and who already had to chastise Trump's lawyer today — gave the disgraced former president a blunt warning.
"Mr. Trump has the right to be present here. That right can be forfeited and it can be forfeited if he is disruptive, which what has been reported to me consists of," said Kaplan. "And if he disregards court orders, Mr. Trump, I hope I don't have to consider excluding you from the trial."
Reacting like an angry child, Trump threw his hands up in frustration.
"I understand you're probably eager for me to do that," said Kaplan, who by now is fully aware of the way in which Trump has been exploiting the trial for political messaging.
"I would love it," said Trump, unable to control himself.
"I knew you would," said Kaplan. "You just can’t control yourself in this circumstance apparently."
No, he can't. Trump has the self-control of a rabid dog and it's time that the court held him accountable. We can't wait to hear Kaplan's ruling...

BREAKING: America's MAGA-controlled Supreme Court launches a chilling attack on a longstanding legal doctrine — opening the door to a horrific right-wing power grab.
This is the kind of thing that slips under the radar and ends up damaging the country for decades...
The court, which maintains the right-wing supermajority that allowed it to repeal Roe v. Wade for Trump, spent hours today ripping into the ability of federal agencies to create policies and regulations that help keep us all safe, healthy, and free.
The Republican Party has long wanted to gut the federal government and roll back regulations because doing so will increase the profits of massive corporations — while hurting average Americans.
The justices are currently hearing two cases regarding the so-called "Chevron deference" which dates back to 1984. It allows agency officials the latitude to effectively interpret the specifics of laws passed by Congress, which are often ambiguous in places.
The Chevron deference stipulates that judges should defer to agency interpretations of laws when disputes arise. Trump-appointed Justice Neil Gorsuch whined that the doctrine means "The government always wins."
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, a Biden appointee, voiced the concerns of the liberal wing of the bench by correctly pointing out that overturning Chevron will force courts to make policy decisions that they don't fully understand since they aren't experts.
"I see Chevron as doing the very important work of helping courts stay away from policymaking," she said.
Justice Elena Kagan, another liberal, used artificial intelligence as an example of a domain in which the courts simply aren't qualified to make expert detailed-oriented decisions.
"Congress knows that this court and lower courts are not competent with respect to deciding all the questions about AI that are going to come up in the future," said Kagan said. "We don’t even know what the questions are about AI, let alone the answers to them."
If Republicans repeal Chevron, they will be throwing our country to the wolves — and it's no coincidence that those wolves donate heavily to Republican politicians.
Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council is one of the most cited cases in American law and a bulwark of environment, healthcare, consumer safety, benefit programs, and nuclear energy regulations.
It MUST be defended.

"Psychologist Martha Stout posits that 1 in 25 Americans is a sociopath. This is a terrifying number to consider since sociopaths have no conscience, actively exploit others for their personal profit and pleasure, and feel no remorse for their actions." Shahida Arabi 1/2
