The weirdest thing at the Viking site was not Viking.
It was butternut.
Archaeologists found the shells at L’Anse aux Meadows, the only confirmed Norse site in North America, sitting in a layer tied to the occupation of that Newfoundland camp. On its own, that sounds like a small detail. Food waste. Debris. Something easy to miss.
But butternut does not grow in northern Newfoundland. It belongs farther south, in warmer hardwood forests around the Gulf of St. Lawrence and beyond. So those shells were not just evidence that people ate nuts. They were evidence that somebody had gone into a different landscape and brought part of it back.
This is what makes L’Anse aux Meadows special. The site already shows work: turf buildings, ship repair, carpentry, bog iron smelted into nails. The butternut adds motion. It points away from the camp, toward voyages into places the settlement itself could not produce.
So why is butternut found at L’Anse aux Meadows when it doesn’t grow naturally in northern Newfoundland?
@realcountry1953 Having gone through my own version of this I can relate. It changes you and that’s when I started writing music. God bless you George! @GeorgeStrait
On this date in 1986 Jenifer Strait, the 13 year-old daughter of George Strait, was killed in a car accident in San Marcos, TX
Something a parent would never get over. 😢
Texas has a vermin problem and one of the bigger rats is Rep. Henry Cuellar. Just look at that smile. See how happy he is to accept over $2.3 million into his campaign and commit to the Israel First Agenda. @AIPAC spent for this rodent.
It's not only the Republican half of the Uniparty that is corrupted by @AIPAC . Nope, the Democrats have their dirty stars as well. Take Jimmy Gomez here. He set AIPAC back a pretty penny at over $2.6 million.
San Agustín doesn’t feel like “a site.” It feels like a message left in stone.
Southern Colombia has hundreds of volcanic-rock statues… humans, animals, hybrids often tied to tombs and mounds. Many were carved roughly 1st–8th centuries CE.
And we still don’t have the builders’ name for themselves.
Imagine moving multi-ton stone, shaping faces and fangs, then walking away from the whole landscape.
What were these figures guarding?
The Mormons wiped out a branch of my family at Mountain Meadows massacre. They dressed as Native-Americans and unalived everyone in the wagon-train all families. above the age of 7...
It turns out that Ohio's favorite wrestling buddy, Jim Jordan is an @AIPAC owned shill for their Israel First Agenda. This one is especially gross. 🤢🤮🤮
