I have been to Ballaghadereen many times and I have friends in the town. Let me tell you about it. Ballaghadereen, once a quiet rural town in Roscommon, is now unrecognisable. This community, with little to no major employment and long neglected by the Irish state, was promised the world when Syrian refugees began arriving in 2017. Locals were skeptical but hopeful, thinking it might finally bring investment, infrastructure, and services. Fast forward six years, and those promises have turned to dust. What we see today is nothing more than a dumping ground—a place where asylum seekers are quietly sent, all while services and supports remain virtually nonexistent.

Imagine this: one of Ireland’s most rural towns has seen its population surge by almost 50%, yet no additional resources, no support systems, and no enhancements to local infrastructure. Older residents who’ve spent their entire lives here now struggle to find suitable accommodation, while the fabric of this community is stretched thin.

And now the horror of last week—a brutal assault on a child. But where is the national outrage? If people knew, if the Irish media dared to expose the reality, there would be a national reckoning. We haven’t learned anything from Ashling Murphy's death, and we’re watching in silence as this government betrays its people. This is no policy for progress—it's exploitation, plain and simple, driven by the morally bankrupt who are lining their pockets in the name of an “asylum system.”

The Irish government and media should be ashamed for abandoning Ballaghadereen and leaving its people in fear, while those at the top profit from a flawed and destructive system.
