WRONG WAY. The Armenian Prime Minister’s statement today at the @AtlanticCouncil, expressing a willingness to withdraw Armenia’s international legal cases against Azerbaijan—even as #Armenia is winning them decisively—is wrong.
First, these legal cases are not bargaining chips; they are key international judicial actions engineered to uncover the truth of Azerbaijan’s aggression and atrocities against #Artsakh and Armenia. To withdraw these cases now—when the outcomes establishing Azerbaijan’s violations of international law are clearly within reach—is to forfeit not only crucial legal narratives, but also moral authority, sovereign agency and, well, the truth. To use the PM’s terminology from his speech, this would be “leveling down” (not up) of Armenian sovereignty.
But there is more. Withdrawing these international cases will not bring peace—that much is certain. In fact, withdrawing the cases will only invite patent impunity from Azerbaijan, erasing hard-won legal victories that are publicly holding Azerbaijan to account. The Prime Minister has the whole thing upside down: these cases must not be sacrificed at the bilateral “negotiating” table—they must be the very foundation upon which a genuine and lasting peace is actually built.
Then, of course, there is the curious failure to understand the colossal lesson of the last century—that appeasement does not work. As we saw in Hitler’s snatching of the Sudetenland and Azerbaijan’s conquest of #NagornoKarabakh, appeasement simply invites more aggression. In fact, as both examples (and countless others) sadly demonstrate, appeasement invites ethnic cleansing and, ultimately, genocide. The truth is that durable peace is not borne of appeasement—but outright genocide is.
This is not the time to bargain away Armenia’s international legal cases. In fact, the international court decisions should aid Armenia in the peaceful resolution of conflicts by ensuring that the negotiated outcomes are based on established legal principles rather than brute force, political expediency, or actual duress.
A peace agreement should not be a mechanism by which to nullify the international legal cases; a peace agreement should be the mechanism by which to implement the outcomes of these cases. In other words, a peace agreement should reflect the adjudicated truth, not whitewash it.
The PM has this wrong, really wrong. A country seeking genuine peace does not ‘deal away’ its international legal cases: it proceeds with them to their rightful conclusion—and then ensures that any peace agreement actually reflects and enforces the actual judicial outcomes.
That is what a just and durable peace is. Anything else is just appeasement … yet again.
DISAPPEARING INK. The fundamental obstacle to peace in the South Caucasus is Azerbaijan’s remarkable ability to disregard its own international legal obligations.
Consider these examples: (i) Azerbaijan agreed to the OSCE Principle of Non-Use of Force in resolving the #NagornoKarabakh conflict, only to violate it with calculated aggression; (ii) Azerbaijan signed the 2020 Trilateral Statement and then breached it in nearly every conceivable way; (iii) Azerbaijan ratified the Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, then invaded #Artsakh and engaged in ethnic cleansing of Armenians; (iv) Azerbaijan acceded to the Genocide Convention, only to use starvation and isolation as tools of modern genocide in violation of Article 2(c); (v) Azerbaijan is a signatory to the Geneva Conventions, yet has repeatedly tortured Armenian prisoners of war and keeps Armenian civilians as hostages in direct violation of international law.
These are not mere oversights. Azerbaijan practices a consistent pattern of treating its own, voluntarily assumed, international legal obligations as disposable stage props. They mean nothing. Aliyev's signature means nothing to Aliyev. Aliyev's legal obligations mean nothing to Aliyev. Aliyev's promises mean nothing to Aliyev.
Sound familiar? Of course it does. In 1938, Adolf Hitler signed the Munich Agreement, solemnly promising that his territorial ambitions would end with the Sudetenland. Naturally, within a short time, he expanded his conquest across Europe and embarked on genocide—demonstrating, as Churchill ultimately concluded that fascist dictators do not stop at peace agreements. Ah, now there's a lesson.
Believing that a peace treaty with Aliyev will somehow result in peace is not just naive—it’s a dangerous abdication of our collective responsibility to uphold justice and protect the vulnerable. Aliyev has faced no meaningful repercussions for his relentless campaign of conquest, destruction, and subjugation against Armenian lands—whether in Artsakh, the border villages of #Armenia, Tavush, or Syunik. He is rebranding Armenia as “Western Azerbaijan,” while claiming that it’s the Armenian Constitution that is holding up peace. It’s a charade. And these charades don't end well--as the genocide of the Artsakh Armenians should already have made clear.
The greenlighting of Azerbaijan must stop. It is imperative that state actors and international institutions address the true nature of the Baku regime and respond with the moral and strategic resolve that the situation demands. It is as urgent as it has ever been. Peace cannot be achieved through empty treaties with a leader who has proven, time and again, that his word is worthless.
True peace requires confronting and dismantling the forces of tyranny, not legitimizing them through hollow agreements that Aliyev has no intention of honoring or, as ridiculously, the awarding of Baku of international conferences like #COP29 that Aliyev simply uses greenwash his genocidal intent.

Azerbaijan is upset that during the #Olympics ceremony, 🇫🇷 TV anchor mentioned that AZE launched agression & took over #NagornoKarabakh.
Azeris: “It was against the Olympic spirit.”
You know what’s against the Olympic spirit?
TORTURING dozens of Armenian hostages in #Baku!

50 years ago today, on July 20, 1974, the Turkish army invaded Cyprus, resulting in the island being divided into two parts: Greek and Turkish. Turkey occupied around 37% of the island's territory, where in 1983, Ankara established the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus," an artificial state formation that has only been recognized by Turkey to this day.
200,000 Greek Cypriots were forced to flee to the south of the island.
Following the occupation of Northern Cyprus, cultural heritage, including several Armenian cultural monuments, was subjected to destruction by the Turks.
Notably, after the 1974 occupation, the Makaravank in the northern part of Cyprus was completely destroyed.
The Saint Paul and Saint Haroutiun chapels in Nicosia ended up in the UN buffer zone and were abandoned.
47 US Representatives and @RepAdamSchiff Call for Swift Action to Protect Armenian Cultural Heritage Sites in Nagorno Karabakh/Artsakh, which are being illegally destroyed by the tyrant of Baku @presidentaz. @POTUS & @SecBlinken must sanction the regime in Baku!

Today I joined my friend @RepDinaTitus in introducing the #Azerbaijan Sanction Review Act, which goes after 44 Azerbaijani officials directly responsible for the ethnic cleansing of #Artsakh’s Armenian population this Sept. We will not let the people of Artsakh be forgotten.
Armenian political prisoner and former Artsakh State Minister Ruben Vardanyan has been granted permission to speak to his wife after nearly three weeks of incommunicado detention in Azerbaijan. He began a hunger strike on April 5, 2024, demanding a fair trial, originally slated for January but extended to May without cause.
Pressure from international governments and public awareness has led to a global movement advocating for his release. Vardanyan agreed to pause his hunger strike temporarily after hearing about the international support and in consideration of his deteriorating health.
A piece by @spechdimaldji on the role of American Armenians in the elections.
not too late for @JoeBiden. With little less than 9 months until election day, he has an opportunity to use his remaining time in office to set the record straight on Azerbaijan.
