On Nov 19, 2025, IJM Uganda collaborated with @CEDOVIPuganda to host a media training in Kampala, on trauma-informed storytelling. The session equipped journalists with skills to handle sensitive topics with care, prioritizing survivor safety & dignity. #EndVAWC#16DAYSOFACTIVISM
The @ODPPUGANDA baraza was attended by Lady Justice Margaret Mutonyi, and @PoliceUg representatives from forensics, @CID1_UG and the child and family protection unit. Also present were civil society actors, faith leaders, media, and members of the public.
IJM Uganda Country Director Wamaitha Kimani reaffirmed commitment to support awareness initiatives that can improve reliance on the justice system. Citing the National Baseline Report released in Aug 2025, she noted that 72% of incidents go unreported, despite the high prevalence
“Our attitude as justice actors is one of the reasons victims choose not to report or settle out of court. Local authorities, Police, ODPP, and Judiciary—we need to check ourselves. There is also fear of stigmatization and retaliation. Selina’s story says it all,” the DPP stated.
Selina recounted how her pursuit of justice was thwarted when local authorities sided with the perpetrator because of his influence. The DPP acknowledged systemic challenges and called for collective action.
Newly appointed DPP Lino Anguzu made a passionate call against GBV, urging justice actors to show empathy toward survivors. He commended Selina, a member of the Uganda Survivor Network, for courageously sharing her lived experience and advocating for protection.
The campaign featured a symbolic march through Kampala’s major streets, followed by an interactive event where citizens engaged directly with justice actors to discuss barriers to reporting and accountability.
IJM Uganda was thrilled to join @ODPPUganda on November 20, 2025, to launch a public awareness campaign aimed at boosting confidence in the criminal justice system for survivors of gender-based violence. #EndVAWC#16DaysOfActivism@IrlEmbUganda
Throughout the month, religious institutions dedicate at least one service to share conversations about biblical justice and practical ways to support survivors of violence, encouraging communities to report cases and seek justice through the criminal justice system.
Observed every September, Freedom Sunday is an opportunity to educate, engage, and empower believers to deepen their understanding on Biblical justice and to take action to end gender-based violence.
IJM Uganda, in partnership with faith leaders, is celebrating Freedom Sunday, an annual campaign aimed at mobilizing congregations to speak out and advocate for the protection of women and children from violence.
