Interesting to me that the Met Gala gets compared to the Hunger Games more than the Oscars red carpet or the Super Bowl halftime show. All of these involve spectacle, celebrities, and extreme displays of wealth. Notably, only one of them is a charity for a public institution (the Met Gala, which is a fundraiser for The Met Museum).
The difference, I think, is that the Met Gala leans more into unusual outfits. That's natural, given that it's a fundraiser for a costume institute. But to me, the perpetual criticism — which comes up year after year — speaks to how people see fashion as frivolous and not as "serious" as other corners of culture, such as sports or movies. The more extreme the outfit, the more offends the public, even if such work is an expression of artisanship and craft, no different from an artist creating a painting.
I've said it before, but Western culture has a long history of seeing clothes as frivolous, even if everyone engages in self-fashioning. And it's notable that "serious" areas of culture are often masculine-coded (e.g., architecture), while feminine-coded interests, such as fashion, are considered frivolous.
One can reasonably question whether the Bezos are trying to whitewash their reputation through the fashion industry (although I would note that we are all participating on Elon Musk's platform, so I see some hypocrisy among some who criticize the Met Gala but won't deactivate their accounts). But I also think we can tax the rich and encourage them to donate to public causes, including institutions like the Met. Given my interests, I also think we should take fashion and clothing more seriously. Thankfully, some real researchers and academics are making headway in that regard.
Is he a center-right, conservative person? Yes, and?
Nobody cares. He believes in a democratic state and the rule of law, and his job is to take Hungary back there. He has declared he does not care what one believes in, or whom one loves, as long as they love Hungary.
The gulf countries were supposed to be America's allies. They were supposed to be BFF with Trump after they lavished him with gifts including a Qatari jet.
They begged Trump not to launch this war on Iran. He ignored them.
Let this be a lesson to America's other "allies" in Europe.
btw have u ever noticed that no one called it a
“gender war” during the centuries that women were forced to marry, give birth, and be men’s unpaid labourers. it only became a war when women began demanding equality
Men won’t agree to a male babysitter for their daughters. They’ll get defensive if they see a grown man standing too close to their teenage child. They become anxious when their daughters are out late.
Yet when women speak about patterns of male harm, the response is, “Not all men.”
the murder rate is falling for the same reason that the birth rate is falling,
and also why there's fewer bands forming and lower church attendance, why teens are less likely to get drivers licenses or participate in team sports, why brick and mortar retail is in a death gasp, why we're in a "sex recession", why shared living spaces in new apartments are smaller, why volunteering rates are at their lowest in decades...
all of these things require or enable people to be around other people—and that's not happening any more.
The men at my office think I'm a buzzkill because I don't laugh at their sexist/body shaming jokes. The number has reduced, but they say to each other "Oh don't say that, she won't like it". My strictness has led to men watching what they say around me and the other women in the office.
Be strict. You're asking them to be decent humans and that is BARE MINIMUM.
Routine sexual abuse of teenage girls isn't the prerogative of decadent elites, immigrant grooming gangs, polygamous cults etc etc. Every women's rights activist I ever met, from every part of the world, has stories about this from her community. Ordinary men do this, everywhere.
Imagine if Virginia Giuffre had never spoken up. We probably would’ve never heard about this scandal. Thank you to her for having the courage to speak up.
They care for aging parents, work in small and large companies, and harvest the food on our tables. On weekends, they walk in our parks and play on the local amateur soccer team.
For me, the choice is clear.
