@NumbersMan3@JENBROOK8@RoadSafetyWales Level-5 autonomous vehicles ( no steering wheel ) will be on our roads before 2030.
I trust that as a pedestrian, or as a cyclist, I will not be required to make any special adaptations as I go about my day, in order for the AVs to be able to see me. It’s *their* minimum duty
@NumbersMan3@JENBROOK8@RoadSafetyWales Hopefully I didn’t come across as critical of OP, by simply confirming that I am already very visible by virtue of my being the size of approximately one human.
@JENBROOK8@NumbersMan3@RoadSafetyWales As you might know, I’m anti-hunting, particularly fox-hunting.
But I can still come here to defend the safety of that same fox-hunter riding their horse home. It’s important not to hold score, but to treat each situation on its merits. I hope you can continue to defend cyclists
@JENBROOK8@RoadSafetyWales Some signs apply to pedestrians too.
I guess we can say: The Highway Code is essential reading for all road users, including pedestrians, mobility scooter users, cyclists, horse riders, drivers and motorcyclists
@JENBROOK8@NumbersMan3@RoadSafetyWales You should continue to defend cyclists from unfair attacks from drivers.
And continue to defend pedestrians’ safety/interests from unfair attacks or behaviours from cyclists ( and drivers ).
Why wouldn’t you, even if you disagree with others/me
@JENBROOK8@RoadSafetyWales I stated clearly that lights/reflectors are a legal requirement ( at night )
The OP could have stated that, rather than stating being visible. Everyone, in any choice of clothing, is visible to drivers - if they look out of the car window
This photo is six-foot-three-of-visible:
@JENBROOK8@RoadSafetyWales I’m not going to go with you on clothing. For example anyone should be able to show up at a rental bike in whatever they are already wearing, jump on, and not be at risk from drivers. And nor should they cause risk to pedestrians, even the partially sighted. They should ensure..
@msando50 I hope you’re not the driver and yet were using a handheld mobile phone for photography and for tweeting ?
Because that would have been a criminal offence.
@ClarkeMicah Many people have pretty-much zero physical activity, and instead drive everywhere.
Don’t be critical of people who decide to do something about it
Full-on cycling might be too much; too much to start with; or impractical for longer distances.
E-bikes are a perfect solution
And
@ClarkeMicah Without my e-bike I wouldn’t be riding, my knees prevent me putting lots of power through my legs. Went over a mountain range this morning. A great enabler for physical and mental improvements.
@NumbersMan3@JENBROOK8@RoadSafetyWales …although you definitely shouldn’t *have* to, we recommend that you lock your doors ( unlike some places that don’t have this normalised harm ) until we have got a grip on the issue
Then I would agree with you
@NumbersMan3@JENBROOK8@RoadSafetyWales If you had said: despite the law there are still criminals freely roaming about who don’t follow the rules. And the police haven’t rounded them all up because they are so numerous and in plain sight. And the punishment is barely any deterrent to stop them. So unfortunately….
@ClarkeMicah One can take an e-bike on a train; use it in cycle lanes, and other cycling safety infrastructure; hop on a rental one at a moment’s notice…
…and yet still be getting the physical and mental health benefits like with any other bicycle
@SirApexTv I recently had reason to firmly ask a pavement-parker to move their car. We all should indeed ask.
However it is not necessary to try to assess, or assume, the driver’s nationality, or imply that this is not their country.
My driver might well be a foreigner. None of my business
@JENBROOK8@RoadSafetyWales …they aren’t wearing the special clothing that the Highway Code recommends for cyclists ( and pedestrians ).
I often wear a hi-viz jacket when cycling. But I don’t always. And rarely wear one when as a pedestrian.
And I have been run over by a driver, who was not looking
@JENBROOK8@RoadSafetyWales …of their windows properly, and drive at a speed appropriate for the conditions/locations.
Therefore there should be no need for cyclists ( or pedestrians ) to dress up in special clothing, or be perceived as being part of the cause of a driver ( or cyclist ) hitting them if….
