Way to miss the point. @RonDeSantis goal is to deliver tax relief to Floridians. People who LIVE IN FLORIDA year-round and are homesteaded here.
Why should a billionaire foreigner who owns multiple houses be treated the same as a Floridian who lives in his or her only home?
Not sure why a Yale professor is interested in what Florida's governor is doing in Florida. The article he attaches quotes leftist organizations and a democrat mayor who has wasted taxpayer's money on non-essential programs according to recent audits.
His statement that lowering single family home property taxes punishing renters and commercial property owners is also not true. I own both rental property and commercial property and the proposed tax changes has no affect on either. What it will do is make owning a home more affordable and encourage my renters to buy their own home. It will save my daughter and her young family over $4,000 a year. Her friends (young families), who didn't qualify for a mortgage because of the taxes, will now qualify for a mortgage. They are very excited and are already looking at homes.
The comments about the tax value of the home increasing to the actual sales price, versus a capped value, is currently true and will result in no changes with this proposed change. Why does saving citizens money bother big government champions so much?
Google is about to conduct one of the LARGEST open-air biological experiments in U.S. HISTORY.
64 MILLION bacteria-infected mosquitoes are set to be released into Florida and California — potentially causing irreversible ecosystem disruptions.
This must be STOPPED.
SENATOR ILEANA GARCIA
36th District
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Florida Senate Announces Historic Property Tax Relief for Florida Homeowners
TALLAHASSEE, FL — Today, the Florida Senate advanced sweeping property tax relief designed to help Florida homeowners especially middle-class families and seniors stay in their homes and keep more of what they earn. HJR IF, a proposed constitutional amendment, significantly expands the homestead exemption while requiring local governments to focus spending on core public services.
"Floridians are facing rising costs in every part of daily life," Senator Ileana Garcia said. "This amendment delivers meaningful, lasting property tax relief to the homeowners who need it most.
We are keeping our promise to make Florida affordable for those who live, work, and retire here."
Under the amendment, which must be approved by voters in the November 2026 general election, permanent Florida residents would see substantial increases to the homestead exemption. Beginning January 1, 2027, the exemption increases to $150,000. One year later, on January 1, 2028, it increases again to $250,000.
This exemption is deducted from a home's assessed value before taxes are calculated and does not apply to ad valorem taxes collected by school boards.
Senator Garcia emphasized that the proposal reflects a longstanding commitment to protecting middle-class families and seniors living on fixed incomes. The Senator stated, "We want people to be able to stay in their homes. We want seniors to age comfortably in place. We want working families to have predictable, manageable bills. This constitutional amendment moves us toward that reality".
To ensure clarity for voters, the Senator noted that the amendment must be approved statewide in the 2026 general election. She also stressed that essential services will not be defunded and that counties and municipalities will be required to spend the property tax dollars they do receive or core public services, including law enforcement, fire and EMS, education, infrastructure, anc natural resource protection.
"This is about focusing local budgets where they matter most not cutting services," Senator Ileana Garcia said. "Police, fire, EMS, schools, infrastructurethose remain protected and prioritized."
The measure encourages local governments to reduce unnecessary spending, increase efficiency, and modernize outdated programs. Services such as libraries, parks, and natural resources can continue to operate through existing fees, streamlined operations, and more efficient allocation of current funds.
"The State of Florida, and I personally, want to bring the relief we have talked about for so long directly to you," Senator Garcia said. "I urge residents to review the facts, support this amendment in November, and claim the relief they deserve while continuing to enjoy the local services their communities provide."

Yeah this is a lie. It fully eliminates property tax for 60% of homesteads and when raised to $500k exemption it will get 92% of homesteads fully exempt.
Median home value is not the same as the assessed value for tax purposes.
You can have a home valued at $250k for tax purposes that would sell for much more.
Wow. Somebody just died on Karen's livestream. LAPD is setting up a white tent to cover the body. This isn't a reality show, it's a horror film. Please pray for this city.
