Using an encoding model based on 65 experiential features to describe each individual concept, we found that, in both sets of regions, the model could decode both kinds of concepts, even when it was trained with concepts in one category and tested with concepts in the other.
Different kinds of individual concepts—from concrete objects to social events—can be decoded from brain activity based on the same (interpretable!) representational code: our new study in JNeuro.

Studies of individuals with brain injury and functional neuroimaging experiments appeared to indicate that concepts for events ("wedding", "storm") and for concrete objects ("spoon", "horse") were partially represented in mutually exclusive brain regions.
Participants read a series of words belonging to different semantic categories during fMRI. Voxelwise and multivoxel pattern analyses converged on the same locations: the posterior middle temporal gyrus and the supramarginal gyrus.
Great talks from last #CNS2024 are online. My talk is also there at https://t.co/oTnPCQH49A - as I try to talk (very quickly) about both blindness, deafness, and handlessness
Last week it was announced that NRC Member @lfernandino received a $2M grant from @NIDCD for his pioneering work in neurology!
This important research will help develop interventions for communication impairments from stroke and other injuries.
Congrats, Dr. Fernandino!🥳
@williamwgraves @BrainStrucFunc Nice work, Will et al! Really interesting study, though I wish you had cited our searchlight RSA paper from 2022, which used a similar experimental paradigm (with different word similarity measures) and found results consistent with yours: https://t.co/mWwqHoq2uS
NSF workshop on large language models and human language May 13-14. Join virtually - it’s going to be a timely and important discussion.

We'll be hiring a half-time post bacc study coordinator for the lab to replace excellent Troy Holsworth, who's starting med school soon. (yay Troy!)
The ad will be posted "shortly" (in institutional times), but email me if you're interested!
MCW BrainExpo is Sat., 3/11, 9am - 6pm. A free, fun event in MKE where people of all ages and backgrounds learn about the brain through presentations and interactive exhibits. Talks at 11am, 1pm, and 3pm. Free parking. @NeuroscienceMCW@CTSIWI@brain_expo#neuroscience
I’ll be giving a public talk at the 2023 MCW Brain Expo on Saturday (3/11) at 1pm titled “Perception, Attention, and How the Brain Constructs Our Reality”. More info about this awesome fun event, open to all, here: https://t.co/q0moW5Cb34 @MU_MCW_BME
Holy cow this is good.
Jon Stewart easily lures a pro-gun/anti-drag queen Republican into a trap…and then blasts him over his blatant, shameless hypocrisy.
