My mom raised me and my two brothers as a single parent working as a nurse in a maximum security prison in our hometown. Can’t wait for the world to read her stories soon ❤️🙏🏽 https://t.co/iHOZmUruHN
I'd say 8 times out of 10, early start-ups have a "sales magician" ... that actually is only a B+ at sales per se.
But ...
- customers >love< them
- knows product cold, better than anyone but CTO
- deeply passionate about mission, product, etc.
And they just do magic. They’re the only one besides the founders that can really close much of anything in the early days.
The easiest way to tell you have product-market-fit is unsolicited acts of affection from users. People reach out of the blue, in private and in public, to tell you how much they love the thing you created. This is incidentally the most rewarding part of it all.
Most "innovations" in go-to-market are fleeting advantages. Automated marketing seemed revolutionary until everyone spammed your inbox. The timeless GTM strategy is strong brand, active listening, quality experiences, and solving real problems. Quality isn't just in the product—it's how you make people feel.
Best hiring advice I’ve received:
Hire people who love what they do so much, they listen to podcasts about it.
Getting to build with these people will make your day. Their obsession, their love for the craft, it’s infectious and awesome 🤩
Sales rep hiring interview tip, and especially for director and above:
Ask them for 1-2 customer references. From customers they've closed before.
The best ones always have 1 or 2. At least.
“In this new economy, three groups will have a particular advantage: those who can work well and creatively with intelligent machines, those who are the best at what they do, and those with access to capital.”
- Cal Newport
Velocity is the only thing that works as a startup. Rapid feedback loops that get you more data. Shipping product faster than the competition. Moving quickly on internal challenges so they don’t fester. Removing bottlenecks that prevent getting to the next stage.
every decision i've ever made that wasn't an instant "hell yes" has been a mistake. every pro/con list is an admission the thing isn't worth it. the path God has laid out for you is so obvious it feels like getting bludgeoned with an anvil. no analysis makes a bad decision good
Next Devcon should be in Nairobi, Kenya 🇰🇪
Perfect place to have the first African Devcon
Good food. Cheap. Safe. Easy visas for everyone. Beautiful parks. Has the conference centre + hotel capacity to support Devcon's size.
Level 1 salesmen focus on getting better at sales.
Level 2 salesmen focus on getting better people to sell to.
Level 3 salesmen focus on getting better things to sell.
Level 4 salesmen don’t sell anything at all and simply make it easy for people to buy.
