@profamandakirby Labels can be stigmatizing or liberating, but it’s dependent on how they are used. Ignorance is stigmatizing knowledge is liberating.

@profamandakirby For me personally, the label was liberating. I wasn’t told that I had dyslexia until I was in gr 9. Tho I had been assessed in gr 3. Before that I still had labels. Slow learner, Bluebird reading group etc. The internalized meaning was the same… Dumb. I am now a school psych.

@profamandakirby As humans, we categorize our world through labels. Plants, animals, fruits, vegetables, etc. If not professional ones than others fill that void. Odd duckling is one I have heard for littles pre ASD dx. Gray area kids for those not low enough for an intellectual disability

As a school psychologist with LD this is upsetting. What is the point in my assessing students if admin is just going to take away a designation I have made. What qualifications do they have to de-identify a student with special needs?

It’s like giving every child with an injured leg a wheelchair instead of physiotherapy as needed. An IEP should have both UDL adaptations & interventions to remediate lagging skill sets.
