Many thanks to @CDNAffairs reporter @meagangillmore for investigating this important issue. Several people were interviewed, and I gave 45 minutes of information, but the article can only be so long. 😂

The quotes selected from our interview highlight the practice and hard work of structured literacy, which includes instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. To give more context, implementing structured literacy in an MTSS framework is hard work for the adults involved as it requires that we do our own learning (and unlearning), and that we do what needs to be done to set up effective systems in our classrooms, schools, districts and province. Also important to emphasize: practice for kids developing foundational literacy skills is essential, and it can and should be engaging and culturally responsive.

I am so glad to see the link to the BCASP position statement embedded in the article for those who wish to learn more. Note: The article says I’m a former school psychologist but I’m still a practicing certified school psychologist in BC, and it’s a hat I’m proud to wear. ❤️ @bcaspcertified #bced #structuredliteracyforbc

@CuriousReader13 @CdnChange Any term can be adopted as a marketing term for sure. That is why the petition advocates for systemic change and knowledge building across the education sector rather than specific programs. Structured literacy as defined in the petition references is what’s advocated for.
