Many thanks to @CDNAffairs reporter @meagangillmore for investigating this important issue. Several people were interviewed, and I gave 45 minutes of information, but the article can only be so long. 😂
The quotes selected from our interview highlight the practice and hard work of structured literacy, which includes instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. To give more context, implementing structured literacy in an MTSS framework is hard work for the adults involved as it requires that we do our own learning (and unlearning), and that we do what needs to be done to set up effective systems in our classrooms, schools, districts and province. Also important to emphasize: practice for kids developing foundational literacy skills is essential, and it can and should be engaging and culturally responsive.
I am so glad to see the link to the BCASP position statement embedded in the article for those who wish to learn more. Note: The article says I’m a former school psychologist but I’m still a practicing certified school psychologist in BC, and it’s a hat I’m proud to wear. ❤️ @bcaspcertified #bced #structuredliteracyforbc
@CuriousReader13@CdnChange Any term can be adopted as a marketing term for sure. That is why the petition advocates for systemic change and knowledge building across the education sector rather than specific programs. Structured literacy as defined in the petition references is what’s advocated for.
#StructuredLiteracy isn’t a pendulum swing. It’s science & trauma-informed, culturally-responsive, effective instruction that’s beneficial for all, essential for many & harmful to none. Read, sign & share #bced

@BCLitChat@CdnChange Absolutely. It is vital that we take this step. Many educators are doing so already but need to be supported at the Ministry of Education curriculum level. Universities must also step up.
BC’s curriculum uses a flawed theory of reading dev. It’s in our materials, methods, assessments & teacher ed/pro-d. 1/3+ of BC students are impacted & there are neg consequences for all of #bced. @bcedplan@humanrights4BC

If there’s a podcast episode I wish #bced (ANY role, K-12) would listen to, it’s this 1. The #literacy struggles described are undeniably happening here. What they’ve achieved can happen here too. Let go of ideology & pedagogical beliefs & just #listen.

Rewatched @RightToReadFilm yesterday and I had many take aways... Like @KJWinEducation I have spent years
"actually trying to convince people to actually teach kids how to read"
and I am so frustrated that globally people seem ok with literacy rates. 1/

It's exciting to know that so many #BCEd teachers are asking great questions about the #ScienceOfReading and #StructuredLiteracy. Please take a moment and complete this survey!
@buckingham_j Thank you for clarifying @buckingham_j. I hope @timescolonist will publish contributions from more informed voices in our province who have deeper knowledge about literacy development & instruction. #bced
The phonics vs whole language debate isn’t productive, so stop perpetuating it. Those who want change in the #bced Language Arts curriculum want what scientific evidence says about literacy development - not “phonics only” & not whole language/3-cuing. 1/2

I’m exhausted with this gaslighting. Our #BCEd ELA curriculum isn’t research based. It’s rooted in inefficient BL practice/theory. @buckingham_j@MULTILITmedia The author of this piece implies that you would support his assertions. Maybe you can provide him with your expertise.
