The older I get, the more I realize that one of the most attractive traits is genuine enthusiasm. It's energizing to spend time around people who show real excitement for life. For people, ideas, and tiny moments. It takes courage to care so openly. Enthusiasm is contagious.
This is free advice from an expensive psychologist. If you’re an anxious person, do everything for fun. Go to a job interview for fun. Submit documents for fun. Start a blog for fun. Anxiety feeds on importance. Don’t make everything a matter of life and death.
Girl to girl: be that girl again.
Get disciplined again. Take care of yourself again. Eat better & move your body again. Oil your edges & drink your water again. Start praying & reading your Bible again. Get your money up and sleep 8 hours again. Find your spark and put yourself first.
Unfortunately if you want to grow you need to be exposed to hard things. You need to wire your brain to think that you can actually bypass anything. You are most probably capable, you just have not tested that ability yet. Do hard things. 🤍
I’m convinced that everyone should take a big swing at some point in their life and experience what it’s like to truly go all in on a meaningful pursuit otherwise they grow bitter with age.
When I was a third-year medical student on my obstetrics and gynecology rotation, I spent time working with an Ob-Gyn named Bruce who had a favorite line.
As he scanned the bellies of expectant mothers, he would ask:
“Do you have a name for the baby?”
If they did, he would enthusiastically discuss the name.
If they didn’t, he would grin and say:
“You know, if it’s a boy, Bruce is a pretty great name.”
As the rotation went on, I started doing admission histories and physicals for women arriving in labor.
They say we absorb our clinical style from our teachers.
So one day, while taking a history from a woman who had recently immigrated from Cape Verde, I decided to imitate my attending.
“Do you have a name for the baby?” I asked.
She told me she was still thinking about it.
Without much thought, I replied:
“Sachin is a pretty great name.”
She paused.
“What does it mean?”
I told her:
“It roughly translates as truth.”
She smiled.
“I like it.”
I was suddenly caught off guard.
What had started as a throwaway conversation starter borrowed from my attending had unexpectedly become something real. A few hours later, another “Sachin” was born into the world.
I have thought about that moment many times over the years.
Medicine gives us extraordinary access to people’s lives at moments of enormous vulnerability, hope, fear, and possibility. Sometimes we underestimate how much even small interactions can matter.
And sometimes, without realizing it, we leave pieces of ourselves behind in other people’s stories.
I won’t give you a list of secrets.
Just one word: OUTWORK.
Outwork like a maniac for what you’re passionate about.
Don’t just dream. Don’t just wish.
Work like nobody is watching.
Work like nobody is willing to.
OUTWORK.
😭🥹 I just saw a TikTok about a girl who moved in with her friend for 6 months to get her life together. The friend told her rent was $350 but she paid $400 anyway.
When it was time to move out, the friend gave her the entire $2,400 back 😭 and said she never needed the money… she just wanted to help her save and get back on her feet.
My God 🥹 THIS is what love looks like. This is grace. This is what it means to be human. 🤞🏽❤️
I highly recommend being friends with ambitious people. Their drive pushes you to also work hard for yourself, they inspire you to do better, be better, their good traits rub off on you.
You start to want better for yourself and you grow.
